Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Thursday criticized comments in US Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) made earlier this month i n a speech that critics have said was unnecessarily confrontational toward a Middle Eastern Christian group.
"We have a responsibility to stand by people who are being persecuted," Santorum told Business Insider in a wide-ranging interview in New York. "This shouldn't be an ideological test well, you have to agree with us on all of these things, or else we won't be with you. No, we're going to be with you if you are a religious minority that's being persecuted by a radical Muslim majority. Period."
Cruz earned the ire of many conservatives for his speech to a group called "In Defense of Christians." During those remarks, Cruz made a point to say he would not support groups in the Middle East who are not pro-Israel.
He walked off the stage to a chorus of boos after eventually telling the crowd he wouldn't "stand with" them if they did not "stand with Israel and the Jews." Critics say he was trying to intentionally provoke an audience he knew was not staunchly pro-Israel.

If I buy you a pretty sweater vest, will you go away?
I think Ted is exactly the sort of person we need in the White House.
“”We have a responsibility to stand by people who are being persecuted,”
Israelis and Jews *ARE* being persecuted. The lives of Jews are not worth more than those of Christians. Although these people sure didn’t act Chrisian.
Santorum desperately wants to surrogate for Romney, again.
Sen. Cruz was correct.
Rick Santorum = Yawn
PS
Romney = Yawn
He shows up every 4 years like clockwork. He had his time in the sun (and on the gravy train) and he blew it. Someone needs to tell him that it’s time to move on.
Speaking of that, what did Mike Huckabee have to say?
Saint Rick is at it again. I remember when the scumbag was tearing down Newt at the last minute in Florida, while simultaneously claiming he would never do such a thing. These scumbags have no principle and are just looking out for themselves, not for the movement as a whole. That’s why I’ll never support Santorum or Mittens, who play dirty against fellow conservatives.
Okay.
Rick, if you’re reading this, please....it’s time to move on.
How’s that?
You just did brilliantly. . . .is anyone in the Santorum camp reading this thread?????
But he got what he wanted, publicity.
Ricky lost the number.
Bull Shiite! He "earned the ire" of pro-Hamas plants who were in the audience.
There are many, but Rick Santorum is at the head of the “just shut up, and go away” people list on my desk.
St. Santo, just another big spending SoCon. But the church ladies love him...
Best other conservatives back off and let Cruz have time and experience to develop his foreign policy.
Santorum has some things to say. I am frankly a bit confused as to what exactly happened at that event, and think there may have been misunderstanding on both sides.
I do know there are Palestinians who claim to be Christians who are VERY anti-Israel. That is unacceptable.
I also know that there are men and women in Palestine who have been VICTIMS of the fight between the various Arab factions (Hamas, Fatah, etc.) and Israel. That is not good either.
Israel must never be compromised. I think we all can agree on that fact. Santorum is pro-Israel, and so is Cruz.
