The teen shot and killed Tuesday (Sept. 23) by a Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's deputy was holding a BB gun, The Courier reported Wednesday.
The deputy, who was investigating reports of armed individuals at an abandoned house in Houma, was met at the door by 14-year-old Cameron Tillman holding a BB gun, Terrebonne Sheriff Jerry Larpenter said. The deputy, thinking it was a real gun, "feared for his life," he said.

Looks like we dodged a bullet.
So a bb gun is a pretend gun??
Are you sure he wasn't acting White?
The deputy stood his ground and shot an innocent boy? Hmmmmmm, sound like its time to riot and loot! Oh wait, can’t, no place to park all the cars and I can’t leave work. Damn, my chance to get a 65” flat screen too.
Holding the gun or pointing the gun at the deputy? It makes a big difference. If all he was doing was holding it then I don’t care if it was an AK-47 with a gazillion round ‘clip’ the deputy should be charged with homicide.
I have a BB gun for squirrels and racoons (yes, it is ineffective), and I have pink string and tape and paint wrapped around the barrel for the (darn near impossible) occasion where a copper would see me holding it.
Did the deputy make it home safe?
*I* learned to never point anything resembling a gun at anything I didn’t intend to shoot to kill (well, except f or targets).
But police training needs to change. A couple of generations ago many kids were given a gun by dad and taught about safe handling. I don’t think this is the case nowadays. As with the Andy Lopez shooting, they’d better start training cops to realize that a kid with what looks like a gun is not necessarily a shooter. As much as some people worry about the case of a kid with what looks like a real gun actually shooting people, it seems nearly as many innocent (if ignorant) kids are getting killed just for coming to the door or walking across a field with a BB or pellet gun.
I’m nearly deaf; I very likely would *NOT* hear someone say “put the gun down and your hands up”, and would get shot. I wouldn’t openly carry anything outside of the range these days, but we used to carry BB guns in fields and the creek and even the hardware store.
I fear overzealous ‘it *might* be a gun, shoot first and ask questions later’ cops much more than I do the actual intentional mass shooter.
I bet those squirrels and racoons would be happy to shoot you after taking a few hits from that bb assault weapon you have there.
Well, I purchased a Ruger pellet rifle with a scope, sat out at the pool, and dispatched 14 squirrels on day #1. I did the same to another 22 over the next two weeks, all in my yard. The smart ones stayed street side. I went out front and ended their little tree rat lives, but was seen by a local cop driving by. He came around the block and chirped his siren and told me to stay in my back yard with that thing!
I had hired pest control guys, put out pans of vinegar, cayenne pepper sprayed in the attic, have a heart traps, cinnamon, and even forced my cat to spend her nights in the attic. None of that worked. I had to resort to deadly force.
My wife reminded me of how bad of an outcome being in the front yard with a black rifle and scope could be in Memphis. So did the cop.
Thank You for that suggestion!
Has the cat gotten revenge on you yet?
Harmless feline. She spent the nights meowing at the attic hatch. I thought the sound might drive them away? It didn’t. Now that the herd is gone, I’ve stapled up chicken wire in all the vents, and spaces they chewed through to get in. I didn’t want to do that until I got them all outside. A dead squirrel in the wall is nasty business for months.
The racoons just stand there and look at you and let you ping them in the forehead.
The leave very very black poop on my deck after eating all my black oil sunflower seed.
I’ve managed to dispatch a couple of ‘em. Somehow.
Could have put the cops eye out .....
I have a bird problem in my attic. Little birds who nest in bunches of 20-30 peck holes in the siding and get in. Killed one two years ago with a BB gun and they quit drilling holes until about a month ago. Trying to kill one now but they're very small, very fast and fairly smart. When I step out of the garage their buddies in the trees warn them.
Don’t do what I tried! I put a five pound bag of cayenne pepper into a shop vac and reversed the hoses to blow it out in reverse. I caused a cloud out of my attic for about two square blocks. There were neighbors crying and coughing and gagging everywhere. The squirrels it left laughing, enjoying their spicy nuts and seeds.
That makes it OK?
Now you've got me thinking of how I could use my ShopVac as a home defense tool. Filling the air with dry powdered pepper hadn't occurred to me before.
I did try spraying the spots they were pecking on with high-content DEET insect repellant. Didn't bother them.
