Report: Households See Electricity Prices Rising At Record Levels
Daily Caller ^ | 09/02/2014

Electricity prices are on the rise across the country, according to federal government data. The average price has risen more than 3 percent since the same time last year — the highest year-over-year growth for the first half of the year since 2009.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, residential electricity prices — what households pay to keep the lights on — averaged 12.3 cents per kilowatt hour for the first half of this year. This is 3.2 percent above the average price this time last year.

New England, however, saw prices rise significantly more than the national average. Since last year, prices have risen 11.8 percent, the highest of any U.S. region. The Mid-Atlantic states also saw huge price increase as electricity rates have jumped 6.7 percent over prices during the same time last year.

In New England prices jumped after wholesale power prices were 45 percent higher during the first half of 2014 than the same period last year to $93 per megawatt hour.

...

Coal plants are being shuttered across the country because of more onerous U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations.

Wind and solar require coal or gas as a backup. Investing in these “alternatives” drives cost up. Look at energy prices in Germany and Belgium, about the highest in the world, mostly due to subsidized alternative energy and the need to buy conventional power quickly when the wind dies.

We just moved into a place without air conditioning, relying on a small portable unit in one room. We sleep in the living room because the rest of the house is boiling. That’s the Obama economy at work.

Not surprised. Here at my house in AZ, over the past couple of years we’ve replaced our a/c units, all kitchen appliances and our washer/dryer with “energy efficient” ones.

Our electric bill plan is so favorable it’s no longer offered to new customers, but we are grandfathered in. We essentially can’t have any major electrical usage between 9am and 9pm, including our a/c because the rates are sky high. To offset that, usage between 9pm and 9am is billed at an extremely low rate.

During the last year our usage has decreased. Each month I look at our bill and there’s a nice bar chart showing each month’s usage vs prior month and prior year. We are lower than last year.

Except our BILL is higher than ever. No matter how much we cut back, how much we sweat in the AZ heat until 9pm and the a/c goes on, the bills get higher and higher.

My neighbors can’t believe how “low” our bill is, and I can’t believe they can afford to pay what they do, but somehow they are.

It is very expensive and troublesome for the power companies to ass the wind power to their grid.

I’d blame the idiot who’s trying to kill coal and nuclear power generation. I think he was elected President by a larger number of idiots, but has since morphed into a dictator who sees no need for Congress.

The tally for hypothermia deaths among seniors will make a fitting 2014 Kwanzaa greeting for comrade obama, reminding all that he kept his promise. He might even be able to collect a few more press agent human head ornaments decorations in time for the national tree lighting ceremony December.

Obama promised he would put coal producers and coal powered electric plants out of business and drive up energy prices.

But people still voted for him.

Ironically, those are just about the only promises he has kept.
