Californians already pay the nation's second highest gas tax at 68 cents a gallon -- and now it will go up again in January to pay for a first-in-the-nation climate change law. ... Estimates of the cost of the tax vary. The California Air Resources Board, the Golden State's premier anti-pollution agency, predicts the new tax will raise gasoline prices from 20 cents to $1.30 per gallon. A prominent state senator who helped author the bill estimated the cost at 40 cents a gallon. Environmental activists downplay the cost, but hail the impact.
"We're going to now tackle probably 40 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the state that are emitted mostly through transportation - oil and gas use," said Climate Resolve Executive Director Jonathan Parfrey.
The cost of the climate change law never was spelled out in the original bill in 2010, which did not even include transportation fuels. But any meaningful climate change law would have to address driving, the state's largest single source of pollution. By raising the price, officials hope to reduce the number of miles driven as consumers are forced to consider options.

LIBs...don’t hold back! To be “fair” the tax should be $100 per gallon with the money going to EBT cards. To not do so is racist and elitist.
Complete horse pucky. I want to know whose pockets it’s going into.
I feel sorry for the Freepers that have to live in the same state as all the brain dead politicians they have there.
“But any meaningful climate change law would have to address driving, the state’s largest single source of pollution.”
Huh? Even Al Reuters says CHINA is the biggest polluter on the planet:

On top of that the City of Los Angeles wants to raise the minimum wage to something like $13.25 over three years.
So all those wildfires are less polluting?
C’mon San Andreas’ Fault! Do it! Do it! Do it!
This will help speed ex-migration due to “the drought”.
This is called progress?
It’s a tax. It’s therefore going to the State Government. The Democrat run State Government. Need I go any further?
Bump
No water and suffocating taxes but really, really clean air. And illegals everywhere on Gubermint benefits.
What’s not to luv?
>> gas tax at 68 cents a gallon
Does that represent the entire tax portion, or just the excise tax?
No griping.
This is what the citizens of the Golden State voted for.
Somebody has to pay for those millions of California illegals getting free everything thanks to a totally democrat run state government.
That’s why it is the Golden State - the illegals struck gold when they sneaked in.
“Like Europe. $12 a gallon gas all taxes and the people took it without even a lubricant. “
They’re made from petrol
One of those options is hanging of officials.
>>as consumers are forced to consider options.
Any politician that votes for something that has that phrase attached should be hanged as a traitor. Or shot.
Agenda 21.
