WASHINGTON, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- In an op-ed for Time magazine, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul spoke to concerns about the role big government is playing in over-policing protestors in Ferguson, Mo., in the aftermath of Michael Brown's death at the hands of local police.
Paul, who has recently emerged as a vocal critic of the role race plays in the criminal justice system, continued to speak to his concerns about "big government" through the lens of police, writing,
"There is a legitimate role for the police to keep the peace, but there should be a difference between a police response and a military response."
Paul recalls his youth, and said if he could not predict his response if ordered by police to stop protesting, but would never anticipate violence as a reaction.
"If I had been told to get out of the street as a teenager, there would have been a distinct possibility that I might have smarted off," writes Paul. "But, I wouldn't have expected to be shot."
Paul then spoke directly to the concerns of America's minority communities, observing that "Given the racial disparities in our criminal justice system, it is impossible for African-Americans not to feel like their government is particularly targeting them."
"Anyone who thinks that race does not still, even if inadvertently, skew the application of criminal justice in this country is just not paying close enough attention. Our prisons are full of black and brown men and women who are serving inappropriately long and harsh sentences for non-violent mistakes in their youth."
The nut doesn’t fall far from the nut.
A loose cannon is unlikely to be elected most valued weapon.
(Much less, sharpest knife)
If you don’t realize that he is right you are blind. Black youth are presumed guilty no matter what. Too many honor roll unarmed black kids have been killed by cops because the cop thought they had a gun. It happens way too often. These cops think they have a gun because they know that all black kids are bad and deserve what they get.
Yeah a lot a kids in the inner city are bad and deserve what they get. This kid that was killed deserved to be locked up but instead he was executed, he didn’t deserve that. He was unarmed when he was gunned down. He had his hands up when he was gunned down.
You don’t think that is racial?
Cops just want to go home at night and if they work in the Hood they will shoot at anything that frightens them. The sad thing is they get away with it.
Just like with the dogs....
Comb his curls and pull up his knickers. He just wet himself. He just joined the ranks of Jesse J and Sharpton.
“This guy is becoming a total pandering dumbass.”
My thoughts exactly.
Complete, yet concise listing of the sins of Rand Paul.
Nice list SunkenCiv!
Its a war zone there life or death.
Our soldiers in Iraq had to worry about every Iraqi carrying a suicide bomb and its not much better in the those areas of the cities. War is hell. Unfortunately we cant just cut and run from those places as we could in Iraq.
Notice how for every few 100 blacks who kill other blacks a white kills a single black, and they riot over the second and yawn over the first.
I have no problem forcing police to video their stops and confrontations, but Rand needs to stop playing rev Al Sharpton.
If Paul was only making a case against racial profiling you might have a point. Instead, he’s parroting the standard leftist “disparate impact” nonsense, citing evidence out of context which is insufficient to support his argument. It’s a load of tripe, and stinky tripe at that.
the justice system skewed?.....of course it is.....its skewed against just as many whites as blacks....
the cops will always stop a skinny stringy haired white kid...always...
drugs are a gateway to prison , no question about that, but drugs are something that you can avoid...
From what I’ve read, this “child” wasn’t profiled. The QT con store-the very same one which has been looted and trashed-called the cops on Brown and a few of his “homeboys” because they had been shoplifting.
well I meant Randy not Ronny...
Amen
When you have limbless Pastor Nick Vujicic 'standing' tall and extolling the Grace of God and Christ -- you have to be pretty small bellyaching about your 'tough lot in life'.

Or Joni Eareckson Tada - a world class diver, who through a tragic accident becomes a quadriplegic, and turns her misfortune into a powerful ministry to help others...
These are obviously outstanding examples - that few of us could emulate -- but the message is the same: Take the hand you are dealt with - and Praise the Lord. He has reasons for what He gave you - so use what you have to His Glory.
He was unarmed when he was gunned down. He had his hands up when he was gunned down.
Why don’t you wait for the facts to come in? Last I heard there was a shot fired in the car. Apparently the policeman was attacked in his car by ‘the kid’ who may have tried to wrestle his pistol away from him.
Before Rand Paul went off half-cocked he should have waited for the system to work. There will be a lot of physical evidence that is much more reliable than eyewitness testimony. Particularly in a heated racial environment like this one.
It isn’t race it’s culture and values. Hey Randy how come other races like Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indians don’t have much problem with police?
“Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indians dont have much problem with police?”
They’re too busy studying.
