Loved post #324. I would like to believe some tortured souls I know were welcomed to his kingdom.

Yes, I noticed. Some here have posted enough judgment to make a Pharisee proud....sheesh.

Jesus had compassion and mercy on all manner of sinners and it is my deepest hope that Robin Williams accepted Christ in his last minutes. Sad to say that in addition to his mental illness, he seems to be yet one more celebrity with very little to celebrate in his life. May God comfort his family and may he rest in peace.

I, too, hope he rests in peace.

His political side was definitely progressive/liberal, but he wasn’t a hack about it, beating people up with it. I was able to watch Williams and get into his characters. I wasn’t busy trying to disassociate him from some latest political rant.

My favorite will forever be his comedy, exemplified in his comedic riffs on “Good Morning, Vietnam.” Oddly, though, my favorite character he played was the psychiatrist on ‘Good Will Hunting’.

<> Kind words are always appreciated and they do help. At the urging of a FRiend, I have been in therapy for last few months and that is helping. I try to avoid all drugs unless life or death so I haven't gone the pharmaceutical route. It is SOOOO important and wonderful that you tell your daughter that she is loved. That is one of the things that upsets me to this day, and I actually talked about it in my last therapy session. Not one hug or I love you my whole life from either parent. That is not an exaggeration. You are a good person to reach out to me and a good parent to let your child know she is valued.

Suicide nowadays is being treated exactly like unwed pregnancy. When the latter was stigmatized, we had very little of it; when empathy and understanding became the order of the day it became an epidemic. Ditto with drug abuse; with alcoholism; and almost any other vice you'd care to name. It's a sign of the sickness of our times.

I think you have some good points, but I'm not sure I agree that it is applicable to suicide. From what I've read such as this chart of: U S suicide rates

The rate was as high, if not higher in the 1950's where we can probably assume stigma towards suicide was higher. I believe better understanding and LESS stigma towards the mental illnesses that frequently lead to suicide are our best chance to fight it.

I get what you're saying though. This is just an issue I've really been struggling with from all angles.

To all who have courageously posted about their own struggles with depression or experiences with the suicides of family or friends on this thread, I truly hope and pray that each one of you will reach out for help and find the support and caring and treatment that will help you in these struggles of pain or grief in your lives.

God bless!

Oh, so sad for his family. Suicides always leave such devastation in their wake.

What’s that old expression about “Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.”

Many years ago, I watched a little of Robin Williams Live at the Met. He was talented but his material was so scatological and sophomoric that it struck me that...here were fancy-dressed people at this opulent opera house...laughing it up over poo poo jokes. It looked like civilization in decline.

I'll remember that. Difficult to put into words, but you have helped others today with your experience. Be well!

Not one of my favorite comedians. Too whacky for me in things. I will admit I’ve never seen his dramactic work like ‘Good Will Hunting’ or ‘Dead Poets Society’.

I did really enjoy him in that one hour photo thing. He was subtely creepy.

RV wasn’t that bad.

He was actually the first choice to play the Riddler in ‘Batman Forever’ with Val Kilmer but Jim Carrey’s star was rising big time and he had big box office draw.

I did watch ‘Mork and Mindy’ every week. Spin off from ‘Happy Days’ of all shows.

He was. Diagnosed bipolar and other symptoms like manic depression. Not uncommon with those in his field. He never could kick alcholism.
