It was back in the 80s.
I’ve meet Robin Williams several times at events in the Bay Area. Nice guy and yes I did envy him. I’m sorry at the demons chasing him. He had more money in a day than I’ll have in a life time.
Didn’t help him.
Williams had everything this world values. Beyond the fame and money, he truly was talented, intelligent, creativity, sharp, good appearance, connections.
It’s a sad thing when anyone takes his own life.
Apparently, he didn’t have a reason to keep going. The reformers taught that reason is “to glorify God.” A friend recently told me that from their Orthodox perspective it is “to become like Him.”
Those really make sense.
Agreed. Thank you for your post on this somewhat discouraging-to-read thread.
bttt - loved Garp.
Insomnia. He was creepy as hell in that movie.
Mass shootings have been happening ever since the revolver was invented.
I suspected he was bipolar. I liked his work also, especially his dramatic roles.
One Hour Photo is the film the poster was talking about.
Trust me. I spent as much time praying for improvement as I did seeing the shrink. I like to think he sent me the Doctor.
Her help and some chemistry kept me alive.
So, please take preaching to people who might think you sound enlightened. Because around here, you sound like a fool.
You quote a newsletter? Did it come in the mail with your other gold newsletters, and the national enquirer.
Quote a medical journal or Science, or Nature.
What do you want? Do you want people to commit suicide, or don't you? People commit suicide when their valuation of death tilts away from their valuation of life. If you see a man standing on a ledge, about to jump to his death, what do you tell him? Do you commisserate with him; tell him you understand perfectly what he's going through, and that he's powerless to act otherwise? Or do you attempt to tilt his values back toward life by pointing out that he has responsibilities both to himself and to the others who love and depend on him? Do you sympathize with his hopelessness and despair, or point out that in refraining from his intended act he clears the way for the possibility of brighter days to come; days he'll never experience if he makes the fatal leap? Do you appeal to his sense of responsibility; of manhood (if he's a man), or do you extol the virtues of cowardice and surrender?
Suicide nowadays is being treated exactly like unwed pregnancy. When the latter was stigmatized, we had very little of it; when empathy and understanding became the order of the day it became an epidemic. Ditto with drug abuse; with alcoholism; and almost any other vice you'd care to name. It's a sign of the sickness of our times.
Thanks. prairiebreeze. It’s somewhat brighter now, if you notice...
The one I saw & couldn’t recall was actually “One Hour Photo”, but now I’m curious about Insomnia. I’m not familiar with that one.
YES! I mis-remembered. Creepy as hell. So out of character it was disturbing.
Al Pacino as a new detective in an Alaskan summer. Robin Williams was in that one too.
Williams had everything this world values. Beyond the fame and money, he truly was talented, intelligent, creativity, sharp, good appearance, connections. It's hard to understand how someone like RW could come to this point. Did he feel he truly had nothing left to contribute to the world? He still had people who loved him, and of course plenty of material possessions to amuse him. I can't help but feel that the progressive frame of mind may have been his downfall - with nothing really to believe in, despair is the natural end result. The world is indeed a "vale of tears" if you get into the wrong mindset. Its a sad thing when anyone takes his own life.

All that said, he was certainly a great comedian, and will be missed. RIP!
>> Of suicide, he once said that it was his constant companion.
An thought that’s probably not as uncommon as we’d hope.
The idea of suicide may be the “companion” the individual controls opposed to the depression that otherwise controls the individual.
Condolences.
“I guess you are a victim then.”
I’m as much a victim as you are an ass.
