WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama dismissed Russia as a nation that "doesn't make anything" and said in an interview with the Economist magazine that the West needs to be "pretty firm" with China as Beijingpushes to expand its role in the world economy.
Obama has tried to focus U.S. foreign policy on Asia, a response to China's economic and military might. But for months, that "pivot" has been overshadowed by a flurry of international crises, including Russia's support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Russia is the world's third-largest oil producer and second-largest natural gas producer. Europe relies heavily on Russian energy exports, complicating the West's response to the Ukraine crisis.
Obama downplayed Moscow's role in the world, dismissing President Vladimir Putin as a leader causing short-term trouble for political gain that will hurt Russia in the long term.
"I do think it's important to keep perspective. Russia doesn't make anything," Obama said in the interview.
"Immigrants aren't rushing to Moscow in search of opportunity. The life expectancy of the Russian male is around 60 years old. The population is shrinking," he said.

They made complete chumps out of you so far, Obie.
great line workerbee
Great Mexican Drug Cartel clients.
both made in china
That is pretty much correct. Russia is a petrostate with a miniscule amount of competitive industrial production.
But their beauty pales in comparison to Michelle’s.
Obama knows why Russia doesn’t “make anything”. He’s trying to remove the incentive to create wealth the very same way from the US.
They make AKs, vodka, MIGs, BUK launchers, SAMs, ... and airliners full of people fall to the ground
At times like these, I wonder if the Nobel Prize committee is satisfied with their choice.
Well one of his sycophants had better inform the immature adolescent in the White House that they are MAKING the RD-180 Rocket Engine that is currently powering 1/2 of all of our Defense related Air Force Launches that have the very important job of placing our country’s Space Satellite Assets in orbit.
Without the Satellites that these vehicle launch (the Atlas V) our War Fighters would be at great risk and we would require at leads 2 or even 3 times the amount of people and hard assets to project the same level of military power we possess today.
Delta IV does the rest.
Idiot.
I honestly cannot think of one past President which has been so childish as this person.
He acts like he;s in college or high school.
Uhhh Baraq, how about anti-aircraft missiles?

What’s the point of stating this? Vindictiveness? He doesn’t appear to want to help them. What a douche.
Go ahead Baraq, tell Vlad (he's already quaking in his boots)-
My take...
Trying to sound tough on Russia and China.
But he makes the huge mistake of dismissing them, and thereby showing a huge lack of awareness, diplomacy, and reality.
Reagan confronted them strength to strength. He also often isolated his confrontation to the leadership and in many ways appealed to the general population.
Insulting Russia at large does nothing to separate the Russian people from bad decisions and tyrannical behavior of their leadership. Standing up to these despots doesn’t mean we must belittle their people. You run the risk of alienating an entire nation.
Result... The people of Russia and China are now MORE likely to coalesce behind their leaders as they battle “American imperialism”, not less. He has given them headlines for anti-American propaganda and pitted people against people, nation against nation, instead of defining our support for the Russians as isolated from our contentions with their leaders... ditto China.
Yeah, and who’s making all those T-80 tanks?
To make things clear, Russia makes pretty much everything. Manufacturing actually makes larger share in their economy than it is in US economy as it hasn’t been all outsourced to China. There are Russian-made smartphones and tablets, HDTVs, shoes, shirts, even a cheap plastic crap. There are Russian domestic car and truck brands, Ford , BMW, GM, Toyota and others are building there as well.
It is true that oil and gas contributes the most to government spending because it is taxed the most, but the idea that it is all the Russian economy is a bullcrap.
exactly. This is the worst diplomacy I have ever seen, and if you can call it that.
High school childish crap from him again.
