Just days after the taking Chicken McNuggets off its menu in the light of the China food scandal, McDonalds Japan has unveiled a brand new, rather unusual product: Tofu Shinjo Nuggets and Ginger Sauce, a combination of bean curd, fish and vegetables shaped into bite-size pieces and deep-fried.
Turning to tofua food that has long been a favourite in Japan and known for its health benefitsis certainly a wise move, and McDonalds is undoubtedly in need of something new to entice customers back with, but while weve no doubt all craved deep-fried chicken at some point in our lives, wed hazard a guess that very few have ever longed for a box of tofu nuggets at the end of a night on the town.
Curious cats that we are, we headed over to our local McDonalds to grab a few boxes of the new nuggets. Join us...to find out how they taste...

Filipinos eat lumpia
Please pass the Soylent Green.
Lots of estrogen in those nuggets!
You'd have to take a boron pill to counteract the effects :-)
Also FWIW, I'd guess the "ginger sauce" is a McDonaldized version of what's usually served with tempura, though it's obvious from the pictures that the nuggets are supposed to emulate the McNuggets and not tempura.
"As a chicken nugget replacement, they certainly look the part they even come with a little tub of dipping sauce but theyre strangely rubbery in texture and the batter felt soft between our fingertips, so werent hugely appealing to begin with."
Tofu is actually quite good for you. (It’s soybean paste.)
It has no flavor; it takes on the flavor of whatever you
eat it with.
So if you eat it with some sort of sauce, all you taste is the sauce.
If you mix it with hamburger, all you taste is the hamburger.
And so on.
I suppose Tofu McNuggets will have as much chicken in them as the real thing.
We report, you decide.
Turning to tofua food that has long been a favourite in Japan and known for its health benefitsis certainly a wise move,
A wise move would be to avoid China for food processing.
I love fried tofu. But I don’t eat it very often.
[ Lots of estrogen in those nuggets! ]
So instead of “Rocky Mountain Oysters “ can we call these things “Boulder Colorado Ovaries”?
Tofu....the other white meat....................
In the name on the link, the "Tofu" is in kanji, but the "shinjo" is in hiragana. If it were "shinjou," that would mean "feeling of tofu nuggets," which would be a reasonable marketing name; I wonder if that's what they meant and were misspelling it the way marketers misspell words here (e.g. "Krispy Kreme"), or if the name means something else.
I used to work at a Summer retreat which had a bunch of Japanese Students for around half the Summer.
Just before they left we would have a “Japanese” night. The girls would prepare Japanese meal and the guys would arrange entertainment.
The entertainment was a combination of great and awful. The meal was mostly great but with one awful dish. The rice balls were delicious and my favorite was pieces of chicken cooked over a fire. The chicken pieces were skewered on sticks which you used to hold the chicken while you ate it.
On the other hand, they made some kind of seaweed dish which was so bad that I noticed the American kids backing up to trash cans and surreptitiously dropping it into the trash.
I love fried sushi, but you can’t find it everywhere.....................
I don’t know which is worse for us: estrogen nuggets or pink slime nuggets? I won’t eat either, nor will I feed them to my children.
I tried a tofu ‘something’ once, once was enough!
It tasted like a combination of cat food and a wad of chewed up calf feed, yacked up by a sick calf, then stomped into a loaf. Heat slice and serve...yummy./not!
ROFLMAO!!!!
