More than 15 wasps stung Lucie Roussel's legs near her Quebec home. She became La Prairie's mayor in 2005 and recently won reelection to a third term.

...

Paramedics gave her an EpiPen to treat an allergic reaction, but it didn't help, La Prairie spokeswoman Chantal Charron said.

The 51-year-old mayor, who was apparently not allergic to bees, died at a nearby hospital from multiple stings and shock

...

She leaves behind two teenage children — her daughter, Constance, and her son, Antonin.

Her husband died several years ago from a heart attack

Very sad, this happened to the husband of one of my co-workers, he was changing a light bulb in an outdoor fixture. Did not know he was allergic and couldn’t be saved in time.

Probably white-faced hornets, the curse of the Canadian bush.

Yellow-jackets are a mere annoyance, comparatively.

The red ones sting repeatedly. Never got stung by a black wasp.

The worst of all are yellow jackets, esp in the fall.

Bald faced hornets in the South will leave you alone unless you antagonize them. But them yeller jackets are just looking for a reason to gang up on you.

Man that’s a bad way to go.

Makes my ear tingle where I was stung by a wasp 30 years ago! Felt like being hit in the side of the head with a bat.

I can’t imagine 15 stings. Dang.

You don't have to be allergic if enough of them sting you. The woman in the story was not allergic, yet 15 stings was enough to do her in.

We have a few hornets around, but they are not common. Red wasps love to make nests in palm trees. I hate to have to trim my palms for that very reason......................

I’ve been stung by yellow jackets repeatedly. I’ll take them any day over red wasps. Getting stung by a red wasp is like getting hit in the head with a baseball bat...................

I’ve had my experiences with yellow-jackets, all right, but running like hell usually works; those white-faced demon wasps will chase you and can kill you.

We have three wasp traps st up strategically around our wilderness home and harvest dozens of the bad boys every day. Here in southern B.C. yellow-jackets are rare this summer, thankfully.

My BIL came upon a hornet nest in the woods when he was a young man. He hit it with a stick. He won’t EVER do that again, I guarantee.................

All flying, stinging insects make me nervous, but none moreso than the infamous Japanese Sparrow Bee (aka Giant Hornet). They kill around 40 people a year in Japan.

As bad a North American hornets are, I have heard that Japanese hornets are like Godzillas with stingers..................All you have to do is come near the nest, like 50 feet away and they will attack en masse.................
