The head of the IRS confirmed Wednesday that investigators looking into missing emails from ex-agency official Lois Lerner have found and are reviewing "backup tapes" -- despite earlier IRS claims that the tapes had been recycled.
IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, testifying before a House oversight subcommittee, stressed that he does not know "how they found them" or "whether there's anything on them or not." But he said the inspector general's office advised him the investigators are reviewing tapes to see if they contain any "recoverable" material.
The revelation is significant because the IRS claimed, when the agency first told Congress about the missing emails, that backup tapes "no longer exist because they have been recycled."
It is unclear whether the tapes in IG custody contain any Lerner emails, but Koskinen said investigators are now checking.
Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee first raised questions about the backup tapes on Monday, releasing a partial transcript from an interview with IRS official Thomas Kane. In it, Kane said "there is an issue" as to whether all the backup tapes were destroyed. Asked if they might still exist, he said he didn't know but "it's an issue that's being looked at."

Scrubbed backup tapes, of course.
It took this long to recreate the backup tapes so that they tell the correct story.
Bingo. You WIN! I was thinking the same thing when I read the headline.
“A rather curious choice of words. Generally speaking backup tapes store data. One can easily imagine that in a few days we will learn that the tapes were blank. “
They will arrest the night operator who ran the backups, reported they were complete and no one ever looked because email archive servers are not mission critical for DR functions.
Most people find it a little odd that the IRS itself wasn’t able to find its own records, and that locating them required “investigators”.
It looks like they’re providing just enough to stay out of Club Fed.
BS, these tapes were likely manufactured to ‘EXONERATE’ Obama’s lackey Lerner.
"Ooooh, yeah, we'll jump right on that investigation. Buddy."
My immediate questions would be...
Who found the tapes, when were the tapes found, how many were present when the tapes were found and who are they, where were the tapes found, what was done with the tapes when found, in what location were the tapes found, why were the tapes in the location where found, what was the chain of custody for the found tapes, what was the time frame from when the tapes were found to when Koskinen was notified, after these immediate questions I would have a thousand more.
I’ll wager two thirds of these questions, if that many, or any of them at all will ever be asked.
I don’t trust Issa to get to the truth, I’ve watched to many committee hearings to trust him.
Let’s just say they were probably in Sandy Berger’s socks.
Yes I remember her. She probably works for the IRS now.
My guess is they found the tapes filed right next to a giant magnet seized during some tax seizure.
He's the head honcho/liberal/progressive. He's just like nobama. He has no need to know much. He has people for that.
It is awful suspicious...
Need to know more about how these tapes all of a sudden are now not destroyed.
And where are all of the tapes for all the other persons lost emails?
These records must be turned over to to Congress (The US Marshall?).
The IRS cannot be trusted to safeguard them.
I'll bet we will get to the bottom of this now! </sarc>
Things like - "But that would be wrong."
prison
The DOJ and Congress should be reviewing the back-ups simultaneously.
However, my theory is the administration has been reviewing the back up tapes for a few weeks to make sure there is nothing incriminating.
To #5. Not a Smidgen???
Bet you can’t name the former FBI agent/Watergate investigator who found out about the tape-recording system from Woods.
