Houses in large clearings ...

I am realizing that many times houses are ignited not by sparks or embers, but by radiant heat. The fire, from a distance and not in immediate contact, will ignite the house, or even furnishings/curtains inside the house through the windows. EEK.

Still, a clearing will help keep the fire at a distance. Poor little rodents; no underbrush for you to immigrate to.

The helplessness of people when up against the power of nature is proven again and again. It makes me wonder where we sometimes go wrong it letting politics dominate our lives.

A few years back the home I built in Lake Tahoe burned to the ground along with 230 others. Much of the problem was lack of forest maintenance, abundant ground fuel not being cleaned up and prohibition against greening around the homes to create firebreaks. These changes all came about along with an influx of liberals moving into our valley along the upper Truckee River.

It reminds me that when my wife and I stayed at the Sun Mountain Lodge in the Methow Valley a while back I chatted with a long time local who was complaining of liberals moving up there and changing how things are run. ...jus' wonderin'

Did you read the article in the WSJ about the Obama administration cutting off the supply of fire fighting equipment because it was declared not environmentally sound?
