President Barack Obama offered his first public comments on Thursday about the Malaysia Airlines plane that crashed over Ukraine, saying his first priority is to find out whether there were any Americans on board the flight.
“Obviously, the world is watching reports of a downed passenger jet near the Ukraine border,” Obama said in brief comments before a planned speech in Delaware. “And it looks like it may be a terrible tragedy.”
“Right now, we’re working to determine whether there were American citizens on board. That is our first priority. And I directed my national security team to stay in close contact with the Ukrainian government,” Obama said. “The United States will offer any assistance we can to help determine what happened and why. And as a country, our thoughts and prayers are with all the families of the passengers, wherever they call home.”
Obama’s comments come several hours after it was reported that a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 with 295 people on board was believed to have been shot down Thursday over Ukraine, near the Russian border.
The plane was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.
“And it looks like it may be a terrible tragedy.”

There was one report that said there was an onboard incident.
I think it was Putin who told him.

Gosh, it MAY BE. On the other hand, maybe this passenger jet didn't plow into the Earth and is perhaps still flying around somewhere or has landed safely with all aboard. All those Twitter pics of bodies and wreckage we've been seeing? Too early to tell what that may be.

Isn't this exactly what the Euros mock American media for: Indonesia is hit by a deadly typhoon that kills 30,000 people, but the headlines in the USA read "Three Americans Killed In Deadly Cyclone".
Sure, that's our first priority. Finding out if Todd and Cindy Chambers from Terra Haute Indiana are amongst the dead. THEN we'll wonder if maybe this was a terrible tragedy caused by a surface-to-air missile battery in the Ukranian/Russian conflict area that has serious geopolitical ramifications.
Hope this didn't interrupt his golf game too long, or he at least allowed the group behind his to play through.

I will assume the “onboard incident” happened about one millisecond after the Russian Missile hit the Plane.
Outside of a Nuke going off in Chicago, I doubt Obama would ever cancel a scheduled Fundraiser, or a Golf game.
That struck me too. Why would he say this. Of course it is a great tragedy if a plane crashes. If shot down by terrorists, that only compounds it. But no question already a terrible tragedy. This president says some bizarre things.
