Interesting. Is this a classic example of the Nanny State interfering in our marriages and our lives?

Or a natual result and benefit of conservatve efforts to stem the destruction of the Welfare State by upholding marriage?

Obviously you CAN legislate morality. The question has always been - Whose morality? The left or the right?

Just a reminder that kids count too.

Divorce used to be hard to get.

During a recent child custody case I was involved with, all parties to the lawsuit were required to take this type of class.

“If I know we’re not in love anymore, I don’t feel like I should go to any class, just move on with our lives,”

Homeboy shows why we’ve lost the Sodomite “marriage” debate. When Marriage is just about two people being in love, getting married to make sex more convenient, how can we keep the fudgepackers out?

I think it should be harder to get married than divorced.

THANK GOD!

As a high school teacher, divorce is frequently the difference between the kids in regular and honors classes.

Parents rarely think about kids when they divorce, but the kids rarely think about anything else.

It's certainly not a case of "interference" when a divorce -- by definition -- involves one or both parties seeking the eradication of a legal relationship that was established under the recognition of the State.

Once you get Caesar involved, you play by Caesar's rules.

We’ve had these classes in our county for twenty plus years. If the parents file too many motions, then there’s a sixteen week course they can end up having to attend. (one night a week)

I think a lot of people in this thread are painting with too broad a brush. Sometimes divorce benefits the kids when one spouse goes off the deep end due to addiction or exceptionally poor behavior. In my case, my kids improved across the board when the x was finally kicked out of the house. The home calmed down, the behavior improved, the grades improved, the stress level plummeted. Not all of us divorce simply because we got tired of the other half.

I think if the state is going to require classes, it should require them before issuing a marriage license.

Wrong legislation. Should have just outlawed no-fault divorce.

This one might be a good idea... nanny state or not. Too man people destroy their children in their desire to punish each other...

Interesting. Is this a classic example of the Nanny State interfering in our marriages and our lives?

Not to long ago Oklahoma passed a law requiring a woman who wanted an abortion had to first look at an ultrasound of the fetus. The purpose, I assume, was so that the person wanting the abortion would know full well that their decision did not apply to themselves alone but also impacted another living human being. Is that a case of the nanny state interfering in our lives? Perhaps, but when children are involved then maybe the state should go the extra mile to protect them. So why should divorce be any different? Divorce doesn't just impact the parents. The kids are affected as well, and quite often suffer more than the parents. Why shouldn't the parents be forced to consider that before ending the marriage.

IMO, this is a stupid law. If the parents do not care enough about their children already, forcing them to pay for and attend these classes will do no good.

Many people seeking divorce don’t care enough about their children’s well being or they would not be looking to split in the first place.

How about classes for the children of parents that are always at each other’s throat?
Like teaching them to hide all the guns, knives and poison mushrooms!

How is the nanny state interfering in anyone’s lives when the folks in question are directly going to the state to dissolve their state sanctioned marriage?

I support this, so long as it only applies to new marriages. I mean, I love the concept, and think we need to make people who signed commitments to take into account the harm to their children.

But for legal purposes, make it a condition of getting a marriage license from the state. If you don’t like it, you simply don’t get an official marriage license, you make alternate arrangements, and you can come and go as you see fit.
