My Uncle Jack made his living playing Piano, although he was self-taught and couldn’t read music.
During the War, the Andrews Sisters came to his post with the USO. However, there was no band to provide accompaniment.
Uncle Jack offered to play piano for them, but they said “We don’t have the sheet music.”
He said, “Just start singing!”
Which they did, and Jack (19 years old)played piano for them for the entire show.

Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper, USA (MOH) Co. C, 325th Glider Infantry 82nd Airborne Division
From Today in U.S. Military History:
Merderet River at la Fiere, France, 9 June 1944
Citation: " He was a member of Company C, 325th Glider Infantry, on 9 June 1944 advancing with the forward platoon to secure a bridgehead across the Merderet River at La Fiere, France. At dawn the platoon had penetrated an outer line of machineguns and riflemen, but in so doing had become cut off from the rest of the company. Vastly superior forces began a decimation of the stricken unit and put in motion a flanking maneuver which would have completely exposed the American platoon in a shallow roadside ditch where it had taken cover. Detecting this danger, Pfc. DeGlopper volunteered to support his comrades by fire from his automatic rifle while they attempted a withdrawal through a break in a hedgerow 40 yards to the rear. Scorning a concentration of enemy automatic weapons and rifle fire, he walked from the ditch onto the road in full view of the Germans, and sprayed the hostile positions with assault fire. He was wounded, but he continued firing. Struck again, he started to fall; and yet his grim determination and valiant fighting spirit could not be broken. Kneeling in the roadway, weakened by his grievous wounds, he leveled his heavy weapon against the enemy and fired burst after burst until killed outright. He was successful in drawing the enemy action away from his fellow soldiers, who continued the fight from a more advantageous position and established the first bridgehead over the Merderet. In the area where he made his intrepid stand his comrades later found the ground strewn with dead Germans and many machineguns and automatic weapons which he had knocked out of action. Pfc. DeGloppers gallant sacrifice and unflinching heroism while facing unsurmountable odds were in great measure responsible for a highly important tactical victory in the Normandy Campaign." |

Bugs Bunny impersonates Al Jolson selling war bonds
#10 Nat King Cole: Straighten up and Fly RightNathaniel Coles (1919-65) was born in Montgomery, Alabama. When Nat was four, he and his family moved to Chicago, where his father became a Baptist minister. Nat learned to play the organ from his mother, who was the church organist. He began formal lessons at 12, eventually learning not only jazz and gospel music, but also classical music, performing Bach to Rachmaninov. Nat would sneak out of the house and hang around outside the clubs, listening to the jazz greats.
Nat began his performing career in the mid-1930s while still a teenager. His older brother, Eddie, a bass player, soon joined the band, and they made their first recording in 1936 under Eddies name. He also was a pianist in a national tour of Eubie Blakes revue, Shuffle Along. When it suddenly failed in Long Beach, CA, Nat decided to remain there.
Cole and two other musicians formed the King Cole Swingers in Long Beach and played in a number of local bars. The trio played throughout the late 1930s and recorded many radio shows. Cole was not only pianist but leader of the combo as well. Radio was important to the Swingers. Their first broadcast was with NBC in 1938.
The old legend was that Coles singing career did not start until a drunken barroom patron demanded that he sing Sweet Lorraine. Cole later said that the fabricated story sounded good, so I just let it ride. Cole frequently sang in between instrumental numbers. Noticing that people started to request more vocal numbers, he obliged.
The King Cole Trio signed with the fledgling Capitol Records in 1943. Revenues from Coles record sales fueled much of Capitols success during this period. The revenue played a significant role in financing the Capitol Records building near Hollywood and Vine in Los Angeles. Completed in 1956, it was the worlds first circular office building and became known as The House that Nat Built.
This was his first hit, whose lyrics originated in a sermon of his fathers.
