His parents said they were so concerned that they called police. Officers who showed up at Rodgers doorstep for a mental health check in April, however, found a well-mannered if shy young man whom they concluded posed no risk.
They hadnt seen the videos, and by the time law enforcement had, it was too late: Rodger had gone on a deadly rampage.
The sheriffs office was not aware of any videos until after the shooting rampage occurred, Santa Barbara County Sheriffs Office spokeswoman Kelly Hoover said.
Sheriff Bill Brown has defended the officers actions, but the case highlights the challenges that police face in assessing the mental health of adults, particularly those with no history of violent breakdowns, institutionalizations or serious crimes.
Obviously, looking back on this, its a very tragic situation and we certainly wish that we could turn the clock back and maybe change some things, Brown told CBS Face the Nation on Sunday.
At the time deputies interacted with him, he was able to convince them that he was OK, he said.
Its not clear why the sheriffs did not become aware of the videos. Attorney Alan Shifman said the Rodger family had called police after being alarmed by YouTube videos regarding suicide and the killing of people that Elliot Rodger had been posting.

People shooting others, all for no apparent reason, one of the dangers of a free society.
The alternative is so much worse, as millions would attest to if they hadn’t been murdered by the very kind of people so many Freepers think should have taken to gun from this young man.
>>The kids PARENTS called them, so why didn’t they bust his chops? “<L<
Because, at 22 years of age he has as much rights as every other adult American citizen and with the right lawyer he could clean their clocks and wallets.
Yeah me too I be in shock if I was a mom
There is speculation that dude wasn’t right in the head KFI radio news has great story on it during Mo Kelly show that dude had “some mental issues’ unfortunately he didn’t fit the critqute of 5150 laws in state of CALI
The local news here keeps on calling it a “Shooting” Rampage..they don’t even mention the three who were stabbed to death..just as I suspected, they no longer exist..they lumped them altogether with the ones who were killed by gunfire and are telling the public that all six were killed by a gun
I wonder if it mattered in terms of searches that the kid lived in a kind of “home,” for special-needs people, apparently. I wonder if they had asked to search, who would legally be allowed to OK it? Everyone seems to be talking a lot (parents, police) very quickly after the crime. I guess it is CYA mode, but it is strange to see.
Why ruin a perfectly good propaganda campaign with facts?
The REASON they always say “Shooter” is because they are ANTI-GUN!
That’s what I was thinking. And it wouldn’t just be hearsay if he posted videos of himself making threats.
Obama’s Administrations is ALREADY considering Knife Control! They are thinking of English knife laws! If you possess a knife outside of your kitchen, you WILL go to jail, is their plan.
Yep, the media knows knives will never be banned and what the Commies have always wanted are guns to be banned, that way they control everyone..whenever I hear someone bring up “Gun Control” I remember the words of Adolf Hitler “To control a nation, one must disarm its citizens.” Meanwhile, turns out the killer was obsessed with the California Lottery, was pissed he never won..perhaps we need to ban the lottery..for the children
I have some butcher knives in my kitchen..I am afraid they might come out of the drawers and start stabbing people..should I go hide under my bed?
Fair enough. I would put more of the onus on the parents to see to it that it was done than on the cops though.
Only anti-Mohhamed videos.
I’m sure glad someone else sees this.
But less than a month before his attacks, after he had planned the killings and obtained the guns he would use, the community college student opened his door to a knock to find about seven officers looking for him.
“I had the striking and devastating fear that someone had somehow discovered what I was planning to do, and reported me for it,” Rodger said in a manifesto obtained by California’s KEYT-TV, excerpts of which were published by the Los Angeles Times.
“If that was the case, the police would have searched my room, found all of my guns and weapons, along with my writings about what I plan to do with them. I would have been thrown in jail, denied of the chance to exact revenge on my enemies. I can’t imagine a hell darker than that. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case, but it was so close,” he wrote.
He said he learned that videos he posted online had alarmed his mother, and he believed either she or a mental health agency had asked authorities to check up on him.
“The police interrogated me outside for a few minutes, asking me if I had suicidal thoughts. I tactfully told them that it was all a misunderstanding, and they finally left,” he said in the manifesto, according to the Times.

I agree, the parents were much more familiar with the son and his situation then the cops could be expected to be. While the cops should have checked out the videos, since they didn't, the kid was able to snow them on his mental state.
Someone upthread said he didn’t fit the 5150 profile anyway. I don’t know anything about that. Did he make threats in any of his videos prior to the last one?
Now these killings can legitimately be blamed on a You Tube video. But the dumb libs will blame it on guns.
I'd blame it on a sick twisted freak.
