His parents said they were so concerned that they called police. Officers who showed up at Rodgers doorstep for a mental health check in April, however, found a well-mannered if shy young man whom they concluded posed no risk.
They hadnt seen the videos, and by the time law enforcement had, it was too late: Rodger had gone on a deadly rampage.
The sheriffs office was not aware of any videos until after the shooting rampage occurred, Santa Barbara County Sheriffs Office spokeswoman Kelly Hoover said.
Sheriff Bill Brown has defended the officers actions, but the case highlights the challenges that police face in assessing the mental health of adults, particularly those with no history of violent breakdowns, institutionalizations or serious crimes.
Obviously, looking back on this, its a very tragic situation and we certainly wish that we could turn the clock back and maybe change some things, Brown told CBS Face the Nation on Sunday.
At the time deputies interacted with him, he was able to convince them that he was OK, he said.
Its not clear why the sheriffs did not become aware of the videos. Attorney Alan Shifman said the Rodger family had called police after being alarmed by YouTube videos regarding suicide and the killing of people that Elliot Rodger had been posting.

They always say “shooter” for some reason. I think murderer or killer would be more appropriate since he killed 3 with a knife.
Unfortunately for the victims of the knife attack, they will never be mentioned again because they were killed with a weapon the left knows can never be banned..meanwhile they will do everything in their power to ban guns
Too bad his father was a liberal Hollywood metrosexual. There was a time in America when a father would have marched into his deranged son’s apartment, took away his guns, stopped funding his drugs and BMW and acted like a man. Instead he calls first the police, then his lawyer and blames inanimate objects for the behavior of this lunatic.
It’s not absolutely clear whether the family specifically mentioned the videos when they called the police and said their son was suicidal. But it would seem an obvious thing to check, whether or not they were mentioned.
It seems to me that they didn’t see the videos because they didn’t bother to look.
Okay, maybe no one told them verbatim about the videos, but did they even run a Goggle search? You know how young people are today, they want to film and post everything about themselves, even gangs members will stupidly do this. If this fellow had been as sick as I believe, since early teenage, he should have been given over to the social system and put into a supervised living facility, or group home. His siblings were cheated out of an otherwise normal childhood because of all his temper tantrums. He was even planning to kill his little brother, and his stepmother. Elliot thought since his brother was a friendly and outgoing little person, the little one would ‘eventually surpass him’ and get a girlfriend before he, Elliot did. That was a development Elliot could not ‘allow’ to happen.
Let me adjust my tinfoil hat: This dad is awfully talkative.
If my son had done what his did, I’d need some strong sedatives for a while followed by intense therapy before ever making a public appearance, let alone speaking publicly.
As usual, a typical CYA move from those who dropped the ball.
The cops are not equipped to make mental evaluations of people and have no authority to act if they did conclude this kid was nuts. That is why, for legal purposes, mental incompetence is adjudicated in a court.
*police. The polcie knew about the videos before they did the checkup. Sounds like they didn’t bother to watch the videos.
“”They always say shooter for some reason. I think murderer or killer would be more appropriate since he killed 3 with a knife.”””
Got a couple with his car, too. Better ban those while we are at it.
LEO had ample warning and failed, absolutely failed to prevent this awful tragedy.

That’s why California includes the 5150 code provision for involuntary incarceration (up to 72 hours, I believe) for a professional assessment. While the cops can’t determine if the subject is crazy, they do have a method to have the person evaluated.
Not ban them entirely. They will still have their armed guards.
Yeah, they said the same thing about Jeffrey Dahmer after one of his teen victims ran naked in the street screaming Dahmer was trying to kill him and the genius cops believed Dahmers story that he was his gay lover and left allowing Dahmer to kill the kid. The bottom line which every cop should know is that psychopaths can turn on the charm, the BS at a moments notice, which is why so many make good Democrat politicians. That is basic common knowledge in any police work. The kids PARENTS called them, so why didn't they bust his chops? "Mind if we look around" stuff like that?
Daddy - a rich liberal elite - needs a mental health check done on his son so HE CALLS THE POLICE? Because they’re free? Because he’s looking to cover his ass and blame the police? What’s wrong with this picture?
Lucky for ‘Daddy’ he’s a liberal elite - the press will buy anything that drops from him mouth.
The police have no responsibility to protect anyone because they can’t be everywhere.
Videos do not kill people.
When the people who know the perpetrator BEST (his parents) call the Sheriff.. CHECK HIM OUT AND WATCH THE DARN VIDEOS!.. or perhaps that interfered with their donut shop excursions?
