That’s why California includes the 5150 code provision for involuntary incarceration (up to 72 hours, I believe) for a professional assessment. While the cops can’t determine if the subject is crazy, they do have a method to have the person evaluated.

That’s what I was thinking. And it wouldn’t just be hearsay if he posted videos of himself making threats.

Fair enough. I would put more of the onus on the parents to see to it that it was done than on the cops though.
