The numbers are arresting.
If Americans under correctional supervision counted as a city of their own, they would form the largest city in the United States after New York.
The number of people in prison, on parole or on probation, 6.9 million Americans, exceeds the populations of the second- and third-largest cities, Los Angeles and Chicago, combined. Or the size of the next four -- Houston, Philadelphia, Phoenix and San Antonio -- put together.
Thirty-eight U.S. states are home to fewer people than live under the corrections system in this country. There are about as many people behind bars as live in Chicago. That's one in every 108 Americans. One in 35 are under some form of correctional supervision.
Among African Americans, the numbers are even more horrifying. According to the NAACP, one in three black males born in the United States today is likely to spend time in prison at some point in his life. That's compared with one in six Hispanic males or one in 25 white males.

Newt needs a better inner voice.
So Newt is cavorting around with commie Van Jones now, eh?
Dinesh already has his GED.
Does he get out now?
one out of every 50 people are in jail???
thats pretty bad
I am for decriminalizing non-violent drug laws
You should not go to jail for using drugs you should go to rehab- the money comes from it being illegal
if Pot was legal it would go from being $200 an ounce to $5 an ounce overnight
and it is FAR LESS harmful than alcohol (from a FORMER pot smoker who knows what he is talking about- its been over 20 years)
If you build prisons, or have any of a number of lucrative contracts like food service, laundry, counciling, legal services etc... the goin’s good. On the flip side of the coin, watch any prison tv documentary and you’ll realize they are locked up for a reason.
I’d rather listen to the late Richard Pryor on this.
“THANK GOD WE GOT PENITENTIARIES.”
I wonder if Newt got a sofa photo with his new BFF...
Newt’s dead to me, now.
Totally tone deaf! What a fool.
Van Jones! The commie lovin Van Jones!?
What the hell is Newt doing paling around with that worthless waste of oxygen? Regardless of the merits, or lack thereof, of the articles premise, it loses credibility with Van Jones associated with it.
And no, I didn’t read it. I stopped when I read Van Jones.
He should sit on a park bench with the marxist and make another commercial. Then he and his wife can do a cartoon book about prisons.
Why not? He shared the “global warmning” couch with Pelosi. Newt is a bad choice for higher office.
How about simply turning prisons into productive places where prisoners earn their keep, instead of burdening the public with the costs? That should be first priority. After that, let them earn their degrees. These would all serve valid purposes for incarceration including rehab for some almost certainly.
Thats why I added Newt and Van in the title. So people could see who wrote this up front.
Here in Indiana, they used to stamp out license plates but the new 3M flat aluminum sheet plates with digital overlay undercut the price so much the govt switched.
“On the flip side of the coin, watch any prison tv documentary and youll realize they are locked up for a reason.”
That’s true, but I think some of the things that go on in prison are tolerated by the prison industry in order to brutalize and alienate people. I don’t think it is a far stretch to suspect the prison industry might do certain things or not do certain things to achieve the highest recidivism rate possible.
Freegards
There is nothing Newt won’t do for another shot at running for president. He needs an overture to the LGBT community. Maybe a sex change or a gay marriage.
why does Van Jones have any credibility on any subject whatsoever????.....except perhaps marxism.
