The McConnell challenge that wasn’t
Politico/Playbook ^ | 5/20/14 | JAMES HOHMANN

Matt Bevin seemed like the ideal candidate to challenge Mitch McConnell. The handsome and personable businessman, a father of nine, impressed national conservative groups looking for a chance to knock off the Senate Republican leader.

These groups, from the Senate Conservatives Fund to FreedomWorks, the Tea Party Patriots and the Madison Project, invested more than $1 million in the Kentucky GOP primary. Bevin himself spent more than $3 million, including $1 million of his own fortune.

And, yet, polls indicate he’s going to get creamed Tuesday.

Poll yesterday showed 18%! still undecided.

Yeah, they could change their minds. Maybe already have.
We need a results thread.

I’m sorry, but I can’t read the obviously biased tripe at politico.com. They aren’t hiding who they are for, are they?

Sheesh. Have the polls closed? If not, then the fight is NOT over. These MSM/Polls and progressive media will do their best to report that they will win, and the other side shouldn’t have even bothered to show up, yadda yadda, all to get us to think, why bother and give up.

Boehner won’t lose. It has been solidly republican since the Civil War. Seriously.

We’ll have Boehner back to deal with. The biggest worry is the lame duck session and amnesty. House members could vote him out, but it would take a coup, and the odds are that Boehner would turn to his friends the democrats for Speaker votes.

So, throwing him out after the mid-terms isn’t very likely.

How do you make it impossible for a speaker to maneuver when he’ll side with the opposition?

I’m going to eat chicken tonight and pull a wishbone apart. :-) If McConnell wins, it appears he could very will lose the general. Seems to be enough outrage to put him in the old folks home for the Winter. I won’t miss him. See you Mitch.

Yep, I just wish Bevin was a stronger candidate. It sure would be nice to see McConnell gone. We already had our primary here in NC. The RINO candidate won.

Yep, I just wish Bevin was a stronger candidate.

I would not matter WHO ran against McConnell, even a clone of Reagan would have suffered the same attacks and machine vitriol that Bevin did. The Ruling Class would have put out all the stops to ensure he never got to the General Election and the know-it-alls amongst us would say the same thing about a Reagan Clone: "He wasn't a strong candidate".

It's all an illusion now anyway. We went Soviet notwithstanding the fact this people are become an emoting and superficial people where principles are seen as an evil to be discarded for expedience. People will vote for whom they think will "win", even if they cannot stand the candidate. They think it's all a gameshow and a horserace because that is how the media portrays it.

That's what you don't understand - the election is over. Not certain why you don't know that. The power of incumbency can be all the politician needs.

Please don't post anything tonight in which you express surprise or is stunned when McConnell wins. Thank you.

Romney wasn’t unelectable. Was he hated here? Yes, but he wasn’t unelectable. Don’t let your hate shade the truth.

Actually, they’re reporting low turnout. That’s a sliver of hope for Bevin against a guy like McConnell who has only 30% approval in his own state.

RINO attacks don’t win elections.

The people of Kentucky have to vote for one or the other. And if they really hate this guy as much as we keep hearing them this wouldn’t even be a discussion.

There are zero excuses for a loss here.

He wasn't elected, therefore he was by definition, unelectable. Don't let your love of liberal republicans blind you to the truth.

Hurl - that’s just not going to happen. It amazes me how delusional people are on this site. Evidence can slap you in the face all day and all night and there is not one shred of recognizing reality. At the very least, it shows a naive understanding of politics.

Had you voted for Huffington, and had he won, he would have legislated every bit as poorly as Feinstein ... only with the "R" of republican following his name instead of the "D" of democrat. How would that be any improvement for America? for Republicans and/or Conservatives? How would that be any different than the disaster we have in McConnell today. You might say that McConnell *is* Huffington in the alternate reality of your analogy. McConnell proves that you did the right thing withholding your vote for Huffington. And if more people would do just that, we'd have fewer McConnells and Huffingtons in the races. You were smarter than the rest of us back then, and it's taken some time for us to catch up. Don't lose your way now.

Money talks, as does the media to tell the low info voters what to think and feel.

McConnell has been attacking Bevin continuously for over a year now.

Non-stop.

Relentless.

And the local media acts just like the national media does: it reports press releases from McConnell’s office as “news” while using the same talking points to bash Bevin for McConnell.

But of course all of this is moot if one understands that this nation went Soviet and elections are just a shell game to placate us into believing we have a choice anyway.

Fascism rules the day.

I disagree. People do care about it. The fact that Bevin took that opportunity to talk about state’s rights shows he is not ready for prime time. A better candidate would have chosen a different time and place to discuss state’s rights.

Nope. Very realistic thinking. Every time the liberal GOP has run a liberal candidate, they have lost. They will do it again in 2016, and give Hillary 8 years.

The liberal GOP-E can't even do something as simple as find a pro-life, pro-gun, anti socialized medicine, anti amnesty, smaller government candidate.

And with the GOP absolutist purist liberal leadership in the legislature publicly declaring war on conservatives, it's obvious they are set to continue to be a minority in the Senate, and lose in 2016.
