House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) encouraged graduates of the University of California Berkeley to be disruptors, using their knowledge and technology to shake up the economic system.
“Being called a disruptor is a high compliment,” Pelosi said in prepared remarks Saturday. “You here at Berkeley are already disruptors in many ways.”
Pelosi’s speech came nearly 50 years after students led by Mario Savio occupied a Berkeley building and launched the “free speech movement,” which sought to lift university bans on political activities.
“Now, it’s all about you — what you can do with your freedom to speak out, with the tools of our time: Instagram and YouTube, Facebook and Twitter,” Pelosi said.
The California lawmaker urged graduates to tackle problems with income disparity, education quality and climate change. She told them their peers around the world will help, and there’s no need to wait for leaders to act.
Pelosi also touched on campaign finance, saying the Supreme Court “equates money with speech, opening the floodgates to secret, special interest money in our elections.” But graduates could disrupt the system.
“Let’s restore power to the voices of the people, not the pockets of the privileged few,” she said.
Pelosi closed her speech with hopeful words: “My wish is that you will be disruptors when necessary, and that you enjoy every moment of it.”
Unless you’re conservative. Then you must obey “the law of the land” that ZerØ chooses to enforce.
Someone should really tell the grads that unless they are going into acadamia or community activism, there aren’t too many careers where “disruptors” last very long.
And someone should also point out that if Berzerkley alums get even more of a rep for disruption, businesses will just have their HR systems disregard any job applicant with the school on their resume.
Did Nanny Pelosi graduate from high school? It certainly is not evident.
Its not law breaking. Its introducing a new order of things. And Democrats are totally hypocritical on this, because they are trying to maintain the status quo. Specifically in business. They’re protecting unions that have long outlived their usefulness, are for a higher wage for skills that aren’t worthy of that wage.
There are examples all over the place of young, scrappy companies trying to shake things up, and old, established unions trying to stop them.
There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part! You can't even passively take part! And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels…upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop! And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!

I respectfully disagree. There are new companies starting up all the time with disruptive technologies. You know who forced out the disrupters? GM, Kodak, Sears, etc etc.
I cannot stand the sight of Nancy Pelosi, but without “disrupters” we’d all be riding horses and reading by candlelight.

When I taught crowd control, some of the photos I used were from protests at Berkeley. It was especially gratifying to see Berkeley protestors subjected to the “long arm of the law.”

What you call disruptors, I call innovators.
What Pelosi calls disruptors, I call tone-deaf pissants who have no clue that successful businesses don’t tolerate political disruption within their ranks.
She’s basically telling these grads to go forth into the world and prostethelize progressivism.

In the tech world they’re called “disruptive” technologies. Ones that totally shake up the status quo. Today my daughter scanned and deposited a check she got as a graduation gift from her cell phone. No need to go to the bank. No need for a bank teller. Thats a disruptive technology. And as a result, we’ll need fewer bank tellers. And Democrats HATE that.
