Damn!
My solution is to send the cars to India, Indonesia and China and sell them for what ever they can get.
Keeping them to sell in Europe will kill all the economies there
RWD cars still dominate demolition derby events, however.
I saw something like it around Frisco Texas back in 85 or so. A housing boom had slowed or stalled and there were whole subdivisions with roads, sidewalks, fire hydrants, driveways and slabs for houses but no houses. They did eventually finish what they had started.
Yup, that and NASCAR, which is essentially the same thing.
Are you my lost twin brother? My wife goes nuts when she goes with me. I tell her she picks the model she wants. Then I start with something else, dick around for a while, find her car, drive it, get his offer, then she droves it. Haggle for a while. Leave. Go to some other dealers, haggle, leave. Now, I look for a similar but cheaper car. The salesman says “what would you say if I can put you in (the original) car if...”
Now, we’re getting closer. Now, we’re talking to the sale manager, then the No. 1 hotshot salesman, then the owner.
Takes 2 weeks to get 3-4 dealers competing. It only works if you can walk away.
You must not get very much snow in central Virginia. Front wheel drive is a lot easier to drive on a icy or snow packed street.
Reference bump ... wonder how many have recall orders?
Hmmm.... I’ve never had that problem. Usually they say something like, “I can really see you in this car and I’ll do everything I can to get you the best deal (lie). Do you have a price in mind that you would like to pay?”
Good advice. I may have to drive a bit to find snow though.
FR has its share of Luddites. Carburetors and leaded gas are the only way to go!
And younger FReepers have no recollection of spending hours pushing rear wheel drive cars out of snow, nor of engines that were worn out at 90,000 miles.
Communism in a nutshell, can’t have unemployed people, so just have them keep making stuff nobody wants.
Hey bro. Good to hear from you.
One time we were $100 apart on the price. I walked out. The 2 salesmen chasing me down the sidewalk, pleading for me to make another offer. I told them that if I found a $100 bill on the sidewalk before I got to my car, we would have a deal. They said “Come on, give us something to go back with. $50, something, anything.” I turned to them and said, “So now we’re down to $50. You know it and I know it. You are not going to blow this deal over $50.” And I headed for my car.
One of the salesmen said, “Wait.” He got on his cell phone and went “Blah, blah, blah.” and then said “We got a deal.”
As we were doing the paperwork, one of the salesmen under his breath said, “You did good.” Took it as a compliment.
It's hard to know if this glut is real. Anyway, in a free market, the manufacturers would either lower prices or production. So if this is for real, then the hand of government must be involved somewhere.
That’s a great story.
I was once $ 50.00 apart on a new car I was buying.
I would not budge. The salesman got exasperated and said “What’s the big deal about $ 50.00?!!”
I said “Because it’s MY $ 50.00”
We closed at the lower price.
Good idea. I'll have to remember that one.
“You did good.”
So did you, my FRiend.
I notice the unsold cars actually pictured are either in the UK (one of the few right-drive countries in the world, limiting the potential for resale abroad — the largest right-drive market being Japan to which exporting British cars, a few high-end luxury and classic sports cars aside, is a fool’s errand) or are Peugeots and Citroens.
Plainly right-drive and French cars are being overproduced or are overpriced. Maybe the same applies to cars in general.
My dad was ruthless when buying a car. When I was a kid we went into a dealer and the young salesman asked him his name. “Jones” said Pa. What’s your first name he asked? “Mr.”
During the negotiation ritual the salesman said I’ll have to run this by our manager and got up. Pa said, I could use a cup of coffee, too. Guy frowned and came back with two cups.
