Rob Gray and his brother-in-law said they were walking down River Street enjoying the sites with their families when they were confronted by a man. Then, a mob attacked them.
“I took a punch to my eye and cracked my orbital,” said Gray.
“I was grabbed by the back of my head at a full run and he smashed my head into the car and I hit the ground,” said Jim Thomas. "This was a violent, malicious attack on a family of eight people."
Thomas says the attackers went after his wife as well.
"There was a man holding her by the nape of her neck, with her hair and dragging her," said Thomas.
And even his daughter was attacked.
"My 6-year-old daughter was punched in the stomach by an adult," he said.
The men say they didn’t see an officer for more than 20 minutes after the attack.

My family fell victim to an unwarranted, viciously brutal attack in Savannah, Ga. Saturday evening while enjoying a Mothers Day weekend. This is a long read, but please “LIKE” and “SHARE” this story so that we can prevent this type of crime from happening to other families.
Saturday evening (05/10/14 approx 9:30 pm) my family was violently attacked and robbed on the Riverwalk in Savannah, Ga.
It all took place shortly after dinner – around 9:30. I was with my family (of five: my wife Sarah, our two sons Owen 11 and Noah 9, and our daughter Julia 6), accompanied with my brother-in-law Rob (who is also my business partner of an Atlanta based business), his girlfriend Roberta, and his daughter Savannah 13.
We had walked along the Savannah Riverwalk from our hotel (Savannah Riverfront Marriott) to have dinner at the Bayou Cafe. After dinner, we explored the river front shopping -“touristy”- area and purchased some memorabilia in some the stores. As we came closer to the Hyatt we were confronted by an adult male who was extremely hostile. As our attention was concentrated on this particular person, I was rushed and tackled -FROM BEHIND- into a parked car by another man. I went headfirst into the side of this car with the full weight of my assailant on top of me and crashed face-first into the pavement. Immediately, there were FOUR more men who punched and kicked me in the back of the head and neck while I was on the ground.
Our children watched in horror as my brother-in-law (Rob) tried to pull these attackers off of me, only to have another large adult male grab him from behind with his forearm buried into his neck, squeezing his carotid arteries, and smashing him to the ground.
As I was escaping from the melee of attackers upon myself, I saw a large male dragging my wife by her hair across the Riverwalk. I did everything possible to make sure that his hands were completely released from my wife. I was then, once again, assaulted by several more people from behind.
My brother-in-law, Rob had been held in a choke-hold just long enough for the main instigator to run to him and send a solid strike to his left eye (which instantly swelled shut). Rob was however, able to free himself from the choking restraint of his attackers... But I would expect nothing less... After-all, he is a retired Airborne Ranger from the US Army!
But our strengths and alert minds were simply not enough to save our children from this brutal attack. I could care less about the bags of our recent purchases being stolen during this attack/robbery and the cuts and bruises on my body. What really upsets me is that my 6 yr old daughter was punched in the stomach. Both of my sons were thrown around. My niece was viciously attacked by one of the older women in this crowd, Roberta was scratched up mercilessly as she tried to save the children, and my wife was yanked around by her hair by a man 3 times her size. All EIGHT of us were assaulted!
What really puzzles me is this: WHERE WERE THE POLICE???
There was absolutely NO POLICE PRESENCE anywhere to be seen or heard from.
In order to escape further attack we rushed into an ice cream / candy store which was merely 10 feet away from where the incident took place on the Riverwalk. Our attackers stood out front in a mob, waiting for us. The shop owner, yelled at us that he didn’t need any of this in his store to hurt his business. Mind you, we are BLEEDING from multiple lacerations, our clothes torn apart, and with a group of small terrified children. We asked him to PLEASE call 911 and get the police there immediately.
After several minutes we left our “safe haven” inside the store and moved quickly down towards our hotel. The whole time these same attackers followed us at a short distance.
We finally did see 2 patrol officers (almost 25 mins after the incident) They took a statement and called for an ambulance. We explained that the people responsible for this attack were STILL there. We never saw any more police patrol or backup.
We were treated by the EMS for lacerations and were advised to get X-rays.
The following morning (after checking out of the hotel), Rob and I went to an urgent care clinic in Savannah and our wives drove separately to take the children home. Rob had been hit so hard, that it has probably fractured his orbital and damaged his left eye. I have multiple scratches, bruises and a scratched lens in my right eye. We both have severe head & neck trauma.
It’s incredulous that this kind of incident could happen in such a well traveled “touristy” area. There MUST be something done in order to have more police presence in this area along the Riverwalk. Visitors should ABSOLUTELY become aware that Savannah, Ga. needs to step up their game in protecting their visitors.
Please help me put a stop on tourist attacks.

Being attacked by a mob is a life threaning situation and should be met with highly accurate and high volume (as in ammo) deadly force.
I also taught close quarters combat in the Infantry and could not agree more with your comments.
I would also advise people to learn how to use a knife and carry one as well. I know some idiots will “stand up” to a gun because of what they see on TV. But only the most determined antagonist will attack someone holding a knife, esp if the holder knows how to use it.
Sounds like poor or no situational awareness from his account. WHERE WERE THE POLICE? Really? Is he planning on the police protecting him in every situation the rest of his life? The police have NO responsibility for your personal protection. NONE.
The only way this "issue" is going to get resolved is by people defending themselves with extreme prejudice and the story getting national attention. Until then the attacks will continue....
All in all, this is a very strange story at this point.
Yes, and always be ready to be on the defensive. A poster on one of the linked articles on this thread, said to ‘read the 911 transcript and that three 911 calls were made and there were witnesses’.
I don’t know how many times I’ve told my boys the same thing. A knife in capable hands is far more dangerous in close quarters combat.
There should be plenty of video (security). (one would hope)
If there are some rough types walking around, I could see (these days) of a store owner whom has to possibly deal with some rough people, ‘not wanting to get involved’. Sad reality today.
“Metro Police are investigating a confrontation between two groups of people on Savannah’s Riverwalk Saturday night.
Downtown Precinct officers responded to a fight in progress near the Rousakis Plaza about 9:30 and found eight members of a family, some with minor injuries. The family included at least two children.
Officers immediately secured video from a nearby surveillance camera and are in the process of determining how the confrontation began and who was involved. The investigation is ongoing.
The attached document shows the call came in at 9:48 and police were on scene at 9:58.

I am so busy and often I check the news via FR. I am very well informed which is valuable especially now
I skim these articles while waiting for things to happen, or at lunch and on my phone
Wouldn’t think of opening original site unless its Daniel greenfield rush or mark Steyn or someone like that and then only of I have time
In this case, this article, I just way the quick facts in order to know where not to bring the kids, and in what geographical area tgeyre having such a trend
I read the post skip to responses and at post ten no one who hasn’t done the time consuming unnecessary task of opening the site can tell where this happened.

River St in Sav is no different than Atlanta Underground after dark. Stay the heck out of both of them if you value your life, and NEVER take children there.
River St gets lots of press for being touristy, if you like that kind of experience, try Central Park in NYNY after sundown.
When a man takes his loved ones into a dangerous area, his options are very limited. He can not just break contact and haul ass, he has to stay and fight off the vermin to try to protect his spouse and offspring. Unarmed, and he will be lucky to get out alive. This guy is danged lucky to still be breathing.
He should have taken the necessary steps to protect his family. CCW would have helped, but totally avoiding that area would have been the better choice by far.
When secs count, the PD in this area are only TEN (10) minutes away.

Wow, so not only was he not being aware of what was around him he was in an area he shouldn’t have been in the first place, with his family? No wonder it took the cops so long to show up. They knew better......

When it comes to black crime (is there any other) most news sites automatically turn off their comment sections nowadays.

Objecting when a couple push through your family and shove the children is hardly starting a confrontation.
When seconds count, the police are about a half-hour away.

The Police Facebook page has a video on how to get out of your car if you are carjacked. Perhaps they need a video on how to avoid trouble on River St. on a Saturday night?
