The Numbers Don’t Lie: Jeb Can’t Win
Yahoo News via Daily Beast ^ | 05/05/2014 | By Michael Tomasky

As we know, the search for an “establishment” candidate has been on in the GOP for a while now, a savior who can rescue the party from Rand Paul or Ted Cruz. That man, of course, is Jeb Bush. Last week on Hardball, Kathleen Parker said he is definitely running. She’s a conservative columnist but not a wacko, has establishment GOP credentials and Florida ties to boot. And she spoke with the air of someone who had had this nugget leaked to her specifically so that she would go out on national TV and blurt it out.

So take the idea of a Bush candidacy seriously. He’ll get many of the biggest donors and most plugged-in operatives, and he’ll immediately be spoken of by the media as a, if not the, GOP frontrunner.

So far, so normal. But here’s where things get interesting. Historically, “establishment” in this context also basically means “most formidable” and “most electable.” Look at the track record. Mitt Romney was the establishment candidate in 2012, John McCain in 2008, Jeb’s brother in 2000. Two of these three never became president, but there’s no doubt that all three were the best the GOP had to offer in their given years. Who would have run better than McCain in 2008? Maybe, possibly Romney himself. But not Mike Huckabee or Ron Paul. And 2012’s lineup besides Romney was comic relief. Any one of them couldn’t have topped 200 electoral votes. And Dubya, of course, won. (Well, “won,” but that’s a different column.)

It’s an iron law of presidential politics: The establishment candidate is, almost by definition, the most formidable candidate. Well, I guess iron ain’t what it used to be, because here’s the funny thing: Jeb Bush is not any stronger against Hillary Clinton

Hahah!!!

My cat did too... mean, mean Burmese. I would pick her up and hold her just to show her who was boss (she was declawed); she’d grumble and hiss a bit, but never tried to bite me.

Funny thing, though. She’d jump on MY lap only and do the pedal-pusher thingy on my stomach and purr. Strange cat.

Same here. Sasu gives fine massages too, speaks never, despises people, but does use my proximity for sleeping purposes on occasion. Other than that, she preens to herself.

I have to admit though... even though I’m not a cat person, I did miss the old girl when she took off.

She definitely had a “personality” of her own.

RE :”That’s exactly what I was saying when I posted the points about Ronald Reagan.
The “purists” are gonna have a hard time finding a candidate that can garner more than 1% of the popular vote.
It’s best they stay at Old Country Buffet, waiting for Lawrence Welk to come on.”

I still see Scott Walker, assuming he wins reelection, as someone who could make it to the WH, who actually had to run a state and make it work (and make things better), who gave Dems one hell of a beating , and survived.

He's got the look and the voice and the demeanor on cam to possibly beat a Dem in a POTUS race.

But the purists, as you call them, will insist on someone so pure that he never accomplished anything.

Like the shutdown, designed from the start to lose to Obama.
Beating Obama had nothing to do with it.

Same with picking a candidate. Recall the momma bear in 2011. That silliness just led to Romney. (obviously not a key factor)

I’m good with Walker.

Walker/Cruz or Walker/West would be a nice combination.

Yes, it's pretty clear from this thread that people are going to believe what they want to believe, the facts notwithstanding. It is unreasonable to think that this will lead to the impeachment or resignation of Obama. That ain't happening under any circumstances. However, there are so many unanswered questions on Benghazi, that Gowdy, if he and the pubbies manage this correctly, can keep the dem's corruption front and center to our benefit in '14 and '16. Who knows, it might even help derail Hillary!.

Either way, you are correct. The fact that this committee was formed, and that Gowdy is the chair, means we forced the GOP-e to do something they didn't want to do.

Mere days after we were talking about Pence, he stated he may be interested.

you have to admit, Romney was the biggest joke...

A sad, sad joke on America. But then again, so was McCain. It's the game that the GOPe plays on our country every four years, at the behest of their statist betters inside the beltway. They love this joke, because it keeps them in power. Next joke: Jeb.

The saddest part is that the Pollyanna Republicans here on FreeRepublic continue to get duped by the GOPe, and snarl, spit, and blame the conservatives who refuse to participate in the joke.

Pence has been a good Governor overall, but not as willing to be bold like I had expected. He’s been lukewarm about the insidious Common Core school curriculum, which caused two Republican state Reps. to be primaried here. I definitely would prefer him to Bush. If Bush runs, I may change my moniker to Bushwhacked. Been there, done that, don’t want to do it again.
