Photographing and videotaping anything in public viewincluding federal buildings and the policeis legal in NYC as long as the documentation does not impede any law enforcement activity. Nevertheless, plenty of peopleincluding journalistscontinue to be arrested and harassed by camera-shy NYPD officers.

While in the back of the car, Paybarah (the arrestee) says he asked the officers why he was arrested for taking video. One officer responded memorably:
I was told by another officer while in the car that recording a police officer was illegal because people are using iPhones as guns and shooting cops through the camera lens.

Union thugs of the jack boot variety.
There’s a simple fix for this. First time infraction for interfering with a videotaping, 3 month unpaid suspension, second offense, loss of job.
If one goes to the stores that specialize in such items, one can buy a gun disguised as almost anything; therefore, the cops can challenge any object you point at them whether a camera or a roll of toilet paper.
Lots of pinhole spy cameras out there to buy.
I wonder. When dogs at the city pound are supposed to be euthanized are they actually sent down to the police firing range?
This is the only reason I’d consider a google glass... documenting the jackboots.
“any object you point at them”
Like fingers, and they are starting brainwashing with 1st graders
I love that NYCLU app!
“””I was told by another officer while in the car that recording a police officer was illegal because people are using iPhones as guns and shooting cops through the camera lens.””””
Seriesly? Doesn’t the cop know that James Bond retired?
How about jail time? They are breaking the law ya know.
Oh the dilemma: Jackbooted thugs vs. Cyclist!
Ping!
Seriously.

Here’s a video of a 4-shot .22 version.

Besides the thuggery of cops, they try to load up charges and ruin every otherwise orderly, peaceful, and productive life that they can. This guy had a traffic infraction - resisting arrest and criminal mischief...?
This guy needed a good lawyer to counter-charge the officers and prosecution. Slam the thugs hard and make it count - ruin their careers to the same degree they do to others. This crap has got to stop!
Not possible. A cell phone gun would have to fire in the long dimension.
“There have been many media accounts of these cell-guns including a report by Lucrezia Cuen on ABCNews.com on December 6, 2000. Most of the information in this particular eRumor comes from that report.
The cell-gun can fire four .22 caliber rounds. “
Not jail time. But certainly permit the citizen to pursue the offending officer in court personally. When they lose the insulation of the state and imperil their personal bank accounts, they may act more reasonably.
I remember when NY state passed this law and was the subject of a thread here: the “Annoy a cop” crime.
Strange but true, and only in the city so nice they named it twice.
