Hmm . . . that view seems to be at variance with both recent large-scale clinical studies that suggest health benefits from moderate alcohol consumption in general and from drinking red wine in particular, and with the advice of the Holy Apostle Paul to Timothy concerning the digestive benefits of wine. If drinking were all that bad, would Our Lord’s first public miracle been the conversion of water into wine?

Where in the Constitution does it give the federal government the right to dictate the drinking age to the states?

You guys don't know much about the Cobnstitution, do you? It's found right after the clause that says it's alright to murder babies.

Let see. Laws against minors drinking cause them to take drugs. I wonder if laws against robbery cause the robbers to commit murder? In general, the vermin like the author of this article want unlimited boy-boy, girl-girl,boy-girl sex in public. They want unlimited public drunkenness whether by alcohol, or drugs, no work, free "things".

The argument used by the author is so stupid that it probably originated with the White House; i.e. since a law does not work 100% repeal it. Genius sheer genius!

Yeah, for sure. Lately, these studies have been breaking my way. Moderate alcohol ok, coffee ok, salt ok. Now, if bacon should be found ok I will be - in hog heaven :)

I have done the same myself by searching for an exact headline. Often a different source has a slightly altered title.

Haven’t you heard that the reference to wine in the bible really means grapeJUICE? Seriously, that is what a lot of bible quoters used to say. Of course it is hard to explain how they could have kept juice from fermenting naturally when there was no refrigeration and no way to bottle or can juice to prevent fermentation. Realistically the only thing they could do with grapes would be to either eat them fresh, dry them into raisins or convert the juice to wine. The bible does warn against overindulgence in alcohol which is just as valid advice now as it was then.

Nowhere, but that didn't stop Reagan from doing it. I remember, I was 20 when it changed. It was basically "change to 21, or lose your highway funding"

I am speaking anecdotally from the many ruined marriages, date rapes, deaths and ruined friendships from the overuse of booze. Our Lord drank wine as a celebration and in moderation , something that the modern world has no concept.

I believe it’s called unintended consequences.
Some people are going to get high however they can. The recent crackdown on prescription drugs has resulted in an increase in heroin use because it is now cheaper and easier to get than oxycodone.

I thought it was after the clause that says that the federal government can require citizens to buy something they don’t want as long as you include a fine for not doing so and then the supreme court rules that you lied when you said the fine was not a tax when in fact it is a tax and you can require anything as long as there is a tax to be paid for not doing it so the government could require us all to eat sourkraut on Tuesdays or not eat sourkraut at all or only eat sourkraut between four and six AM on Sunday as long as the penalty for not eating sourcraut is a tax and not a fine even though you claimed all along that it was a fine or a penalty or something but it definitely was not a tax but then the insane supreme court ruled that you lied all along and it really was a tax.

Jackie Mason could say it a lot better than I but then I am not the Ultimate Jew and could never be.

i.e. since a law does not work 100% repeal it.

Prohibition was not only a law but a constitutional amendment, and it wasn't even close to 100% working, and it was repealed.

And it did cause many otherwise law abiding citizens to commit crimes such as frequenting speakeasys and making bathtub gin. And it occurred at all levels of society.

In my experience, 40 years ago, alcohol was easily available. Buying beer from the deli store, the owner was Greek, all he saw was cash. ID? Perish the thought, we're doing business here.

A Friday afternoon was absurd, so many cars filled with high school kids going to the deli..

Not sure what it's like today for the underage youths.

Actually, this is correct. When I was growing up in New York, 18 was the legal age, and this worked perfectly well.

**************

Same, but in Texas. As far as I am concerned if they can tap you for conscription you are old enough to drink, period.

One can always drink privately in one’s own home no matter what age one is.
