Study Shows Ethanol Produces Worse 'Global Warming' Pollution Than Gasoline

Well, this is going to be a heartbreaker for the hysterical global warming crowd. According to a new study, emissions from burning corn are worse for the environment and produce more CO2 or 'global warming' gases than the burning of traditional gasoline.

Biofuels made from the leftovers of harvested corn plants are worse than gasoline for global warming in the short term, a study shows, challenging the Obama administration's conclusions that they are a much cleaner oil alternative and will help combat climate change.

A $500,000 study paid for by the federal government and released Sunday in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Climate Change concludes that biofuels made with corn residue release 7 percent more greenhouse gases in the early years compared with conventional gasoline.

The federal government has already dumped billions of dollars into facilities and programs producing biofuels in the name of preventing climate change but as usual, is having the opposite effect than originally intended.

Just last week, biofuel industry producers told the New York Times 2016 was the year they were looking most forward to bring cleaner energy to the United States. Oops.

“The whole purpose of the Renewable Fuel Standard was to encourage investment to create brand-new technologies that would help the United States become more energy-independent and use cleaner and more efficient fuels. We feel like we are just on the verge of doing that and now the E.P.A. is talking about changing the rules," Executive Vice President of the heavily subsidized biofuel company Abengoa Christopher Standlee said to the paper.

Al Gore, call your office.

I don’t like the sound of that one. :( Only thing I can think of is a loose timing belt/chain.

Grain lobby got what it wanted, corn in gas and a carb heavy “Food Pyramid”. Neither were good for America but it probably benefited politicians and grain producers.

No food for oil.

It was one of those "new" healthy items. IIRC, there were only a couple of folks who produced them. I think people found out....big deal...we'll wait till they get bigger and have real beans.

You have to follow the money on these things.

Schumer was promoting one single yogurt company here in NY....and as far as I know...that company is the only one contracted to supply NYS schools and they get subsidized besides.

Read it again, if people “discuss it” they are discussing an alternative to ethanol...they should refuse to continue any discussion or the premise is accepted....nuance isn’t your thing is it?

No, You better read it again. You are changing the subject. We need gasoline like it used to be before ethanol was added to it. You want to get a lousy gas mileage for your your vehicle, that's not my problem

BULL BISCUITS!!!

The whole purpose for ethanol was to have the government siphon off billions of tax payer dollars to cronies, AND increase the demand for corn.

If they actually cared about energy, they would NOT be using ethanol, which is a far lower energy fuel than could be made with, say, switchgrass.

But then ADM and US farmers don't grow switchgrass.

It has been my distinct impression that when it comes to discussing anything more technical than a paperweight, most journalists rapidly prove themselves incapable of mastering the fundamental concepts, much less correctly conveying the operational details with any level of scientific accuracy.

First off, let me state, in case you didn't get it from my previous post, that I believe the entire "renewable fuel" scam is nothing more than "legalized" graft.

Butanol is a far more energy compatible fuel to use with gasoline, having a specific energy level that's only about 10% less than that of gasoline, far better than that of ethanol, which is about 40% less. However, it's not a panacea. For instance, it's substantially more toxic than ethanol, and while it has greater specific energy than ethanol, it's substantially lower octane, which limits the cylinder compression increases that would increase power and mileage, or would require octane boosters.

Alcohol based fuels are good in a few, specific applications (like racing) in engines that were designed to burn alcohol fuels. But they suck for user by the general public.

Yeah, so what? It’s not about the climate or Gaia...it’s about filling tax coffers and enriching politicians and corn (subsidy) types...

Meanwhile, my mileage dropped from ~20-21 mpg to ~16-17mpg...means I buy fuel more often, paying additional taxes to keep the government machine rolling along.
