Matthew Douglas de Grood, the son of a veteran police officer, has been charged with five counts of murder following the killings in Calgary.
Police Chief Rick Hanson said: "We have never seen five people killed at one scene. The scene was horrific."
At least 20 people were at the house party which was being held to celebrate the end of term at the University of Calgary.
De Grood, 22, was invited to the party and soon after arriving picked up a large knife and began stabbing people one after another.
Three men were found dead at the scene while another man and a woman died at a local hospital soon after.

If only someone had a gun.
Doesn’t fit their political motives.
Assault knives with high capacity blades must be banned.
Knife Contol is needed. LOL
I have noticed there seems to be a huge number of people with Dutch sounding names in Western Canada.
Dutch-ish name, but where’s he from ?
Our local paper had about 1 column inch in the News of the world section, a few days ago. It also said that this was the worst mass murder ever, in Calgary.
You laugh but I read a while back - maybe a year ago or so - that a doctors group in Britain was pushing for just that, knife control/regulation.
Gos against Agent Gibbs of NCIS rule #7, “Never go anywhere without a Knife.”
Something seems wrong. His eyes look vacant and unfocused, and one eye looks partially closed. He has a not-all-there look about him.
See, gun control legislation DOES work. If folks had had easy access to a gun, there might have been another child victim of gun violence.
He does not look Dutch.
Kristin Kreuk does not look Dutch either.
It is clear that this tragic young man has the look of one of Canada's "visible minorities". The politically correct have wielded this phrase to elevate such persons to a higher level than the average Canadian.
I viewed the interview with the sadly distraught father of De Grood. He is very obviously a Caucasian. He is a high ranking police authority. He seems to be in bad health and shaking. His wife (poor lady) is supporting him. I would say, though I don't know, that she is of either Filipino heritage or maybe Indonesian. This is where the young man gets his looks.
I do offer, at my risk, a take on the situation. He may have believed what he was told about how unique he was, as a "visible minority".
One can only sigh at the incessant cries about "diversity" in Canada. Simply put, people should get on with life as they find it.
Excuse the rant.
Surinam?
Maybe related to all the Dutch in Western Canada there seems to be a lot of Indonesians. Of course that part of the world was a Dutch colony before WWII.
