~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, California

Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach is a United States Navy weapons and munitions loading, storage and maintenance facility located in Seal Beach, California with detachments in Concord, Fallbrook, and San Diego, all also in California.

The command exists to provide base operating support to the Navy's ordnance mission. Command and tenant personnel provide munitions receipt, segregation, inspection, maintenance, storage, issue, and assessment services to Navy operating forces and other Department of Defense and homeland security entities. Overall, the command supports the provisioning of missiles, torpedoes, and other ordnance to a majority of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

NWS Seal Beach occupies 5,256 acres, has 230 buildings and 128 ammunition magazines providing 589,299 feet of ammunition storage space. Ammunition is moved from storage to the docks on 56 miles of railroad line and 80 miles of road. The base owns 130 pieces of railroad rolling stock and 230 trucks and trailers to move the ammunition which is loaded onto ships using six mobile cranes that can lift up to 90 tons.

The Weapons Station is also home to the West Coast site of the World War II Submarine Memorial. The Memorial is dedicated to the over 3000 submariners who lost their lives in United States submarines in the 52 submarines lost during WWII. There are also plaques dedicated to those who lost their lives in submarine accidents during the Cold War. The Memorial is located outside the main entrance to the Weapons Station on Seal Beach Boulevard and is accessible to the public.

Well, it got below freezing this morning. Had to turn the furnace on.

Supposed to get into the 60's later today. Going to try to do some lawn mowing.

Good morning Pro ((HUGS))

Geez, hope the job hunt proves fruitful for you soon. I have a nephew-in-law who has been searching for close to a year. He had to come back to MD to help another NIL with his home improvement company, so he could pay bills (sorry if I’ve already told you this before). Still praying.

Have a terrifically terrific Tuesday.

You know I just came across this just now...Muh bad...;-)

My command had been to Seal Beach several times for weapons onloads back in the day...

We were always told that if we saw Marines standing post on the bunkers and at some good vantage points while we were along side the quay there, we were getting something “special” loaded...

Never saw them out there I guess...;-)

The speed run we used to make north out of San Diego was always fun to do...The rooster tail we used to be able to put up was pretty impressive...We always thought we might be able to ski behind our ship, but it was always just that...A thought...
