In a letter to Navy Secretary Ray Mabus last week, five Democratic senators urged him "to increase smoke-free areas on bases" and give sailors more access to programs to stop smoking.

"We urge you to do everything in your capacity to address this issue for our military men and women, including moving forward with the proposal to stop the sale of tobacco aboard all naval bases and ships," said the letter from Sens. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., Dick Durbin, D-Ill., Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, Jack Reed, D-R.I., and Sherrod Brown D-Ohio.

I am virulently anti-smoking, but all I can say here is: LEAVE OUR MILITARY ALONE.

I remember the DI making me eat my can of snuff in boot camp.

Cured me of wanting to chew for quite a few years.

Heck, I knew some who smoked while doing it!.................

I do remember smoking non-filters back then, so that after a day of field stripping them you didn't have a pocket full of filters. "Smoke em if you got em."

Who won WWII? That’s right - the smokers (with, I must add, the exception of Hideki Tojo, who was a smoker).

Japs did last the longest, though. But with 3:1 odds, Tojo was outsmoked by the ally leaders.

They did it in education,

And within years, the best teachers were eradicated.

That will be the same in the military.

What about pot? Will they be allowed to smoke weed? Dems see pot as their call-to-arms for the young people. It is ridiculous, of course.

How many of the creepy DIMs recommending this ever served even one second in the military?

The two Dicks, Durbin and Blumenthal are trying to control people's behavior again. It's ok for the soldiers to smoke poles but cigarettes are off limits. We need to ban asshole senators, not cigarettes.

Appointing “republican” Chuck The Schmuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense is far from being the biggest hoax Obama has perpetrated on America.

But he easily makes the Top Ten List.

And increase funding for drag-queen shows.

"This is something we need to look at," Hagel said of programs to curb smoking and limit tobacco sales. He noted that related health care problems from smoking cost the Defense Department more than $1 billion annually.

This is a major reason why the democrats insist on national healthcare. Because it gives them justification for usurping our rights and expanding their control over individuals. They can then begin banning things under the banner of fiscal responsibility. You see, if being fiscally responsible means giving you orders, suddenly they're all for it.

That said, I do enjoy the no smoking in restaurants. So maybe I’m a hypocrite.

...you’re not a hypocrite...the no smoking in restaurants and bars is a great step forward...

...much as I dislike being around smoke, I hate the idea of nannyism even more...so I laugh at anyone proposing a smoking ban on outdoor areas such as decks and parks...

Gee it’s a good thing that there are no important problems to deal with like base security or men/women being shot on base - oh wait never mind.

Yea, smoking, haircuts, gays, political correctness and cutting pay/benifits is so much more important when you are a ba**less mac daddy sock puppet.

While I hate smoking and I haven’t since military basic in 1967, I hate seeing nanny state regulations and laws. That said, I do enjoy the no smoking in restaurants. So maybe I’m a hypocrite.

I've never smoked...possibly because both my parents smoked like chimneys when I was a kid and I wondered, early on,about the logic of smoking.Although I have opinions on the general subject I'm not a militant anti-smoker.On the subject of smoking in the military I think an argument can be made that banning it would,in time, improve mission readiness.
