Sick Again? Why Some Colds Won't Go Away
WSJ ^ | 24 Mar 2014 | SUMATHI REDDY

Some people get back-to-back colds, infected by a new virus

~snip~

To get infected, the so-called ICAM receptors, which the rhinovirus attaches to in order to enter the nasal cells, need to be open, Dr. Palmenberg said.

"Rhinos are out there all the time, it's just a question of when you are susceptible," she said. Factors such as stress, lack of sleep and people's overall health can make them more likely to get infected. More than 150 strains or genotypes of the rhinovirus have been identified and researchers believe there are probably many more.

Rhinovirus replicates best in the relatively lower body temperatures of the upper respiratory area, such as the nasal passages, sinuses and throat.

Other viruses, such as the less-common adenovirus, can replicate and attach to receptors in the upper and lower respiratory tracts, causing a more serious illness...

“Sick Again” is a Led Zeppelin song. Robert Plant’s fault.

Used this since my 3 operations in 2008 and haven't had a cold since! At the very first inkling sign of a cold I use it and the cold is stopped dead in its tracks!.................

I used to come down with a cold three or four times every winter. Each incident would take me a minimum of three weeks to recover from.

I’ve had one cold, in the last two winters, and I recovered from it in three days.

What did I change? I started eating real food, instead of processed crap.

Is that available over the counter?

I use zinc cough drops the same way. First sign of a cold, take a Cold-Eze. My last cold lasted three days instead of the usual two weeks, because of Cold-Eze.

I have noticed that since I wipe off my shopping cart/basket, then make sure to clean my hands again after going through the check-out line (make sure you don’t touch your face, etc. until you get your hands clean), my incidence of colds has reduced to maybe one a year, sometimes none. If you use cash, clean hands after touching it - it’s really dirty. I carry disinfectant wipes in the car - if the store has them, I use theirs ... if not, I use mine.

I use something similar, and it does seem to help. I used to get maybe one cold a year, but then I had three kids with leaky faucets for noses, so the wife and I get sick more often. This winter has been especially bad.

YES! It’s available at Wal-Mart.

No sting or pain.

I had sinus surgery 3 times in 2008 for an inverted papilloma (google for gross images) in my upper sinus cavity that had grown so large it stopped by breathing thru my nose completely. Doc said it was the largest he had ever seen. It had grown so large that it had penetrated the wall between my sinus cavities! He operated and was only able to remove about half of it because it was so large. I was referred to the Shands hospital in Gainesville, FL at University of Florida (GO GATORS!) (320 miles away) for further treatment by specialists.

It took two more operations, numerous CAT scans, MRIs and lots of trips to Gainesville that year to get it fully removed. Their doctors said it was about to penetrate my cranial cavity and effect my brain if it wasn’t removed quickly. The two operations finally got it all, thank God, or they would have to have cut the front of my skull like removing my face to get at the growth.

I lost my sense of smell for about a year because they had to scrape the entire inner lining down to the bone. And my voice sounded ‘funny’ to me because the cavity was so drastically altered. Luckily the sense of smell eventually returned, though the docs told me it was 50-50 of ever coming back, and I have now grown accustomed to my ‘new’ sound.

My first washer was free from my doctor. It came with a dozen or so little packets of ‘mix’ to use with the squeeze bottle. Refills are kinda pricey, so I ‘analyzed’ the stuff and saw that is was nothing but salt and baking soda.

I mixed up a batch on my own of 1/4 cup plain salt, not iodized, and 1/4 cup baking soda. Each ‘dose’ to use in the bottle is 1/4 teaspoon mixed with warm water.

The first time you use it, you will be scared because the thought of running water UP your nose is illogical. I had to use it to wash out all the dried blood, mucous and possible infections to allow the wounds to heal properly, so it was a case of necessity.

I fill the bottle with the mix and warm water, bend down over the sink and hold one nostril shut while squirting the warm solution up the other nostril. I force air behind and with the solution to speed it thru the sinuses (doc told me not to do that, to prevent tearing the stitches and stuff, but it makes it work much better). You would be surprised at what comes out of your sinuses, even if there is no operation to heal from.

It became addictive after a while and eventually became a part of my routine, like brushing my teeth.

This is what the media was so upset about when the ‘water boarding’ controversy was going on during Bush’s Term. You are actually waterboarding yourself! It feels weird the first few times, but it eventually becomes actually pleasant when you get used to it.........................

Last I heard there were over 210 different viruses that cause the common cold. As you get older, you will have had exposure to most of them as a kid and young adult, so they won’t affect you any more...................

My late mother used those 2 products for just about everything.

She lived to be 91.

OUTSTANDING! Not only does your remedy work on the common cold but trains me to overcome waterboarding when The Won’s storm troopers take me prisoner.

I had a cold I couldn’t kick. So I tried raw garlic, crushed and spread on toast with butter. I saw good results in two hours.
