Nobody went after Venice like Russia went after Crimea.

This will never happen in the U.S., since they won’t give up federal money. Unless they can get more a foreign aid.

Venice could become another Monaco.

Interesting. I wonder how this will play out.

Being a part of a large country is necessary when you worry about war. No one worries about war anymore, and Europe could not even defend itself if attack. So why not break off? “Every man to his tent”. (Come to think of it, that didn’t work out too well, either.)

The proposed ‘Repubblica Veneta’ would include the five million inhabitants of the Veneto region and could later expand to include parts of Lombardy, Trentino and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

Does anybody know if the USAF base at Aviano would be included in this region?

Garibaldi must be doing 360s in his grave.

“Wealthy Venetians, under mounting financial pressure in the economic crisis, have rallied in their thousands, after growing tired of supporting Italy’s poor and crime ridden Mezzogiorno south, through high taxation.”

Coming soon to a State near you!

As I remember, Italy has not been a country for any long period, they were all city states before. Venice is just going back to where it was before so could Florence, Rome and etc.

The floating city has only been part of Italy for 150 years.

Actually it's 148 years.

So much for the Risorgimento. Mazzini, Garibaldi, Cavour, and Victor Emmanuel II must be spinning in their graves. (Not that they were nice people, mind you.)

Why God forbid Texas?! The conservative states should secede. It would be excellent to ditch the east and west coast.

We in America don’t think about this very much. But, there are distinct regions of America, such as Texas, in which people don’t feel they have much in common with people in Boston, Cambridge, Berkeley, Upper West Side of Manhattan, etc.

Even within states, Chicago is a different world from downstate Illinois, upstate New York is different from the New York City area, etc.

Stay tuned. This trend could come to America.

If we split into a liberal America and a conservative America, some major issues would go away. Because critical numbers of people in each area would agree about abortion, homosexual marriage, the role of government, the size and scope of government, school policies, tax policies, and other areas of disagreement between liberals and conservatives today.

Next is conservative rural districts seceding from liberal controlling cities.

Why weren't there a similar percentage of independent-minded people in Los Angeles to vote to separate San Pedro, Echo Park, and the San Fernando Valley from Los Angeles?

Why weren't there a similar percentage of independent-minded people in Colorado to vote to separate the sensible parts from the Democrat-trending parts?

Even if majorities had voted for secession in these American cases there most likely would have been law suits, etc. to prevent the splits, but it would have sent a message to the idiots in charge.

Have Americans already become Euroweenies?

Relatively conservative Northeast Philly has been trying to secede from Philadelphia for decades, now it’s too late. The section 8 housing has contaminated it and the smart ones have already moved out.
