Heavy rains from the Amazon to Australia have curbed sea level rise so far this century by shifting water from the oceans to land, according to a study that rejects theories that the slowdown is tied to a pause in global warming.
Sea level rise has been one of the clearest signs of climate change - water expands as it warms and parts of Greenland and Antarctica are thawing, along with glaciers from the Himalayas to the Alps.
But in a puzzle to climate scientists, the rate slowed to 2.4 millimeters (0.09 inch) a year from 2003 to 2011 from 3.4 mm from 1994-2002, heartening skeptics who doubt that deep cuts are needed in mankind's rising greenhouse gas emissions.
Writing in the journal Nature Climate Change on Sunday, experts said the rate from 2003-2011 would have been 3.3 mm a year when excluding natural shifts led by an unusually high number of La Nina weather events that cool the surface of the Pacific Ocean and cause more rain over land.
"There is no slowing in the rate of sea level rise" after accounting for the natural variations, lead author Anny Cazenave-Wanker of the Laboratory for Studies in Geophysics and Spatial Oceanography in Toulouse, France, told Reuters.

lolwhuteva!
The average sea level rise since measurements began back in the mid-1800s is about 0.5mm per year.
Once the next ice age kicks in sea level will drop about 500 feet which is the edge of the continental shelves. This is where it was during the middle of the last one.
Sea level was about 20 to 30 feet higher about eight or nine thousand years ago because it was a bit warmer.
And during the last ice age, the Sahara desert was covered with grasslands and lakes.
Heavy rains mean less water in the ocean? Where is that rain falling? Is the surface of the planet more water than land? Yeah, I thought so.
And I thought that most of the water that fell on the land eventually made its way back to the ocean. Silly me.
And most of the water that fell landed in the ocean to begin with. Pretty soon they will tell us that aliens are secretly stealing the missing heat, but higher taxes can fix that too.
Well this is a good thing isnt it?
Wouldnt this be a reversal of the desertification of the globe that we all used to hear about?
Desertification was one of the HORRORS of global warming that had to be stopped.
OH NO billions were going to starve because all of the arable land was going to dry up. Now they are saying that the reverse is a BAD THING?
This is GOOD NEWS!!!
“The reason we weren’t lying before, is because we came up with a cockamamie explanation which is an even bigger whopper, which justifies why what we said before wasn’t true. So you should still trust us, not only on what we said before, but also what we’re saying now.”
‘zactly!
“Why doesn’t the article also mention how all the world’s rivers have stopped flowing? That alone explains why there’s less water in the ocean.”
They’re saving that one in case the more rain means less ocean doesn’t fly.
Next they will blame it on a shortage of cow farts
Why don’t these people ever run out of chicken little theories-do they have certifiable lunatics on the payroll dreaming them up?

Duh, now let’s see. CA is still in a drought because there’s not enough rain landing on the land, meaning there’s not enough runoff to fill it’s reservoirs and rivers, meaning there’s not enough runoff in the rivers for the fish in the rivers and oceans. Then, duh, duh, more rain over land will mean the land will (horrors !!) capture all that water, meaning there will even be less for the oceans and fishies.
Global warming is causing a rise in sea levels but a pause in global warming won't cause a pause in the rise of sea levels?
And any pause is caused by something else?
How doe that work?
Golly gee whiz! Al must have known this when he recently purchased his OCEANSIDE ESTATE complete with 6 (six) carbon-producing fireplaces.
He’s a mind reader too! Who would have thought . . . .
LOL do they read the crap they write
