Updated 4:37 p.m. | New Jersey Republicans avoided a nightmare scenario Wednesday night in the highly competitive, open-seat race for the 3rd District.
Ocean County Republicans endorsed former Randolph Mayor Tom MacArthur as their preferred nominee. The endorsement comes five days after the Burlington County GOP also backed MacArthur.

“...But in New Jersey, the county party endorsement process is highly consequential in picking the nominee. Endorsed candidates receive preferential ballot placement called the line an advantage thats proven difficult to overcome on the primary ballot....”

Yes, once the GOPe has its designated RINO candidate, it’s a done deal.
Just like in Pennsylvania earlier this week. /Sarc

I like Lonegan, but wouldn’t he appear to be a bit of a carpetbagger in a race for NJ’s 3rd congressional district if he lives in NJ’s 5th congressional district.
I know Tom & his wife Debbie, he has my vote!
I also like Lonegan don’t get me wrong.
I like Steve Lonegan and I was proud to vote for him in our race to fill the vacant Senate seat. As far as I’m concerned (not that it counts for anything) Steve won the election because it’s very strongly believed that Cory Booker hasn’t lived in NJ for years now and if so he was not qualified to run.
he recently purchased a house in the 3rd district.
the same as the ‘endorsed’ candidate.
Ocean County is New Jersey’s version of God’s waiting room. I would suspect that Lonegan’s support for smaller government over the years has all the geezers worried their Social Security checks will not keep increasing, so they will not have more coins to throw into the slot machines down in AC.
I got no love for anyone the NJ GOP would favor.
But that being said, I’m sure Mr. MacArthur is a lot better than the democrat who would probably beat the perennial loser Steve Lonegan. Lonegan needs to stop running for office.
At least one NJ freeper on this thread says MacArthur is just fine.
Lonegan has a huge warchest, $2.6 million. Aside from Democrat Belgard, all the other candidates have $0. It’s impossible to see him losing here.
The roll call article strongly disagrees and says the endorsement of both county party (Burlington and Ocean) organizations makes MacArthur the favorite. I presume the next fund-raising report will show a cash infusion for him.
Lonegan did carry the distinct against Booker. But Booker is a clown who would have lost in a slightly more Republican state without a corrupt GOP that sat on it’s hands. There is no reason to believe that Belgard is an incompetent clown like Booker, so I don’t see why we should risk running Stevie.
District, I mean. Lonegan carried the district over Booker.
MacArthur has pledged to spend 2.5 to 3 million of his own money.
Just a point to add. That was a special election and there was a low voter turnout. Most unlikely Lonegan would have faired as well in a normal election.
No MacArthur had a vacation home in the district for 10 years, until it was redistricted out as a result of the 2010 elections....he was also very active in the community during that time and still. He recently purchased a home that is in the boundaries of the new district.
Lonegan never had a thing to do with the NJ’s third district until just recently when he decided (after promising he wouldn’t run again) he was going to run there. This is his FIFTH attempt to seek higher office, his SIXTH if you count his run for State Senate. High time Lonegan stopped foisting himself on an unwilling NJ populace, who’ve made it clear six times, they don’t want him.
The problem with that is that if the electorate were a Republican rejecting a Republican, you’d have a point, but NJ has a nasty habit of “rejecting” the better candidate.
MacArthur didn’t run before 2010 so NOW he just ‘moved into’ the third dist.
Same as Lonegan.
I don’t know how conservative MacArthur is; but does the fact that he is backed by the ‘establishment’ give you a warm fuzzy feeling?
Also it is a shame that MacArthur has to commit to spend millions of his own money to qualify for party endorsement.
Is this how the Republic is supposed to work?
Why should or would Lonegan promise “he wouldn’t run again”
My decision is still up in the air.
I however do not appreciate the BS in the negative commercials!
Well that's good. But it still makes it hard to use the carpetbagger issue against Stevie.

The writing is on the wall with Stevie, he's plain unlikable just like Oberweis and Tom Tancredo, running him for a competitive House seat would be a huge mistake. And he should never be forgiven for helping RINO Doug Forrester win a plurality over Bret Schundler in 2005.
Oh, did Lonegan have a second home in the district for ten years, until it was redistricted out in 2010 like MacArthur?
They might both be considered carpetbaggers by many but it isn’t “the same.”
“Plain unlikeable,” you got that right. And as you point out his record as a conservative isn’t as untarnished as some would like to believe.....
