Too much inequality and too few natural resources could leave the West vulnerable to a Roman Empire-style fall
Navigate to the Previous Story in this Section TECHHere's How NASA Thinks Society Will CollapseToo much inequality and too few natural resources could leave the West vulnerable to a Roman Empire-style fall.
Few think Western civilization is on the brink of collapsebut it's also doubtful the Romans and Mesopotamians saw their own demise coming either.
If we're to avoid their fate, we'll need policies to reduce economic inequality and preserve natural resources, according to a NASA-funded study that looked at the collapses of previous societies.
"Two important features seem to appear across societies that have collapsed," reads the study. "The stretching of resources due to the strain placed on the ecological carrying capacity and the economic stratification of society into Elites and Masses."

Here’s a policy that reduces inequality and preserves natural resources: end low-skill immigration to the United States, thereby bringing U.S immigration policy in line with the rest of the 1st World.
The Eastern Roman Empire fell because Muslims destroyed it. How’s that outreach goin’ boys?
“Shouldnt NASA just explore space and STFU?”
That’s what I thought, what’s this got to do with launching rockets? This agency has outlived it’s usefulness.
How the hell does that fit into their mission statement?
SoFloFreeper got it right. I can’t improve on that.
Decadence. When there are TV programs called “who’s your daddy” the collapse of civilization can’t be far.
Couldn’t predict O-ring failure ,but knows how the world ends.
Ok.
The Roman fall came more generally when Julius Caesar consolidated all power in Rome. His adopted son, Caesar Augustus, finished the job of consolidating power into the Imperium.
The Roman Senate became nothing more than the City Council for Rome.
Brutus and the other Senators were correct.
Ouch! That's gonna leave a mark.
“economic inequality”
When you see those thieving buzz words, you should pull out your guns and start shooting [figuratively, of course].
In order to “equalize” income, either the low income have to be worth more,
or force has to be involved to pay them more than they’re worth.
And there’s no way the left means to use the former method.
Can anyone please explain to me WTF income inequality has to do with this? I know its a big commie buzz word these days but HOW EXACTLY is this supposed to crash an economy? To bad even NASA has been corrupted by leftist fools.
What the heck is NASA doing conducting these kinds of self-serving socialist studies? How does this fall under the domain of Aeronautics and Space Administration???? Isn’t there another propaganda ministry tasked with cranking out this kind of collectivist drivel?
What a putrid end to what was once such an exciting and vital organization.
DC has already collapsed. The rest of us Romans are merely propping up the capitol city.
The Roman empire collapsed for demographic reasons. Too few Romans, especially those willing to defend the Empire. And, on the other side, too many barbarians who got ever more aggressive as Rome weakened. At first, Rome was able to co-opt the barbarian tribes. Starting with the Vandals, they eventually figured out that Rome was a paper tiger and started chipping away at the Empire. Rome was sacked a number of time, starting in the early 400s.
I see the same thing happening here. We’ve discarded the melting pot for multiculturalism. To our elites, Diversity = Strength, but in the end it will tear us apart.
Don’t forget their program to increase the self-esteem of muslims.
Brutus and the other Senators were correct.
I’m so old I remember when NASA was about manned space exploration. I even remember they employed really intelligent scientists, trained daredevil test pilots to be astronauts, and planned dangerous missions to the moon and beyond. But then, I was just a naive kid who read too many comic books and dreamed.
