Russia raised the stakes in its conflict with Crimea Friday, reportedly seizing a Ukrainian military base on the peninsula and beginning large-scale air defense drills.
Witnesses say Russian troops broke through the gate of a missile defense base with a military vehicle, trying to break into a command post, but no shots were fired, Interfax Ukraine reported Friday.
Initial Reuters reports said the truck had pushed through the gates of a post in the city of Sevastopol, but there were no signs of damage. There was conflicting information about the circumstances of the raid.
A Ukrainian military official, Vladislav Seleznyov, told Reuters the armed men took over the base without any shooting and no one appeared hurt. Another Ukrainian official told Reuters at the post that he was now mediating between Ukrainian forces and the armed group inside.
About 100 Ukrainian troops are stationed at the base in Sevastopol, Interfax reported, citing a duty officer and Ukraine's defense ministry. About 20 "attackers" threw stun grenades, the report said.
The Ukrainians barricaded themselves inside one of their barracks, and their commander began negotiations, Interfax said.
Earlier Friday, there were reports Russia had begun large-scale air defense drills as tensions remained high over the fate of Crimea.

Its like they were waiting for Obama’s vacay to start to see if he would stick with it or “handle” from there.
Putin is playing with him.
What’s that hitting the fan??
Geez, I hope nobody disturbs Obama’s vacation. You know, he’s put in a tough two weeks since his last vacation!
Pray for the people of Ukraine, and the people of Poland, and of Latvia, etc.
The sleeping giant Reagan had shut up in the wastes of Russia, was allowed to re-awake by the Bushes and Clinton and now is running amok with a mere adolescent in the White House.
And now both our POTUS and VP are on vacation right now?
This is comforting...
russia is putin down
I get the impression the Ukrainians are so divided on issues and sovereignty, that the Russians won't have any trouble pushing them around. - Tom
The Russians should have been dealt with at the end of WWII. Patton was right. Will we ever again elect another leader who knows how to deal with murdering commie scum?
It's Ukrainians vs russians. Remember there are russians living in Ukraine. They want their say also. Thus the conflict. This is what America will be like when Amnesty passes.
In Sept., 1855, the French successfully stormed the fortress of Malakhov, on the south shore of the bay, and three days later the Russians were forced to abandon Sevastopol. A record of the spirit and sufferings of the city's defenders has been preserved in The Tales of Sevastopol by Tolstoy, who fought in the ranks of the besieged. Sevastopol declined as a military fortress after the Crimean Peace Conference (1856), and its fortifications were razed. After 1871, however, they were rebuilt, and in 1890 the city again became a chief naval base. The Sevastopol sailors mutinied during the 1905 revolution. In the Russian civil war Sevastopol was the headquarters of Gen. P. N. Wrangel during the last stand of the Whites (1920).
The heroic resistance of Sevastopol in 185455 was, if possible, eclipsed by the stand the city made against the Germans in World War II. During a siege lasting more than eight months, the city was virtually destroyed. For three weeks the defenders fought on in the rubble, against all hope, until July 3, 1942, when German and Romanian troops at last took the city. After its recapture (May, 1944) by the Russians reconstruction began. As a reward for its valiant resistance, Sevastopol was named a "hero city" of the Soviet Union. The city was transferred to the Ukrainian SSR in 1954 (as was all Crimea) and became part of the independent Ukraine in 1991. It is the home of the former Soviet Black Sea fleet. A 1995 agreement called for four fifths of the fleet to fall under Russian control. In 1997 it was agreed that Russia would be allowed to base its fleet at Sevastopol for 20 years; a 25-year extension, to 2042, was signed in 2010.

And now both our POTUS and VP are on vacation right now?
************
Just imagine if Bush and Cheney had gone on vacation during an international crisis. The media would have gone nuts.
> And now both our POTUS and VP are on vacation right now?
This is comforting...
Meanwhile the rest of the American peasants that are suffering under King 0’s rule can’t even consider taking a vacation with their pay and hours cut (if they even still have a job) while the cost of everything has spiralled upward out of control because of his horrid economic policies, he fallout of which his devoted prostitute press is hiding from them.
I don’t know they are Russians?..
If there is no arm band are flag then shoot them down, they are nothing but outlaws looking to die..
Gutless Russians for not wear insignias and gutless Ukrainians for not firing a shot.
It would have been a scandal that wouldn’t go away until someone was in jail. Remember when Bush finished reading to the kids after he was told about the attacks on 9.11.01?
Isn’t bozo talking to some kids now? something about financial aid?
Because everyone who is supposed to take care of this Country is on vacation right now, I’d say all that is happening right now has been planned. putin is advancing right on schedule.
Uhhhhh.....they were on our side.
