Krauthammer’s Take: Obama Tells the World We Aren’t Going to Do Anything About Invasion of Ukraine
National Review Online ^ | February 28, 2014 7:08 PM | NRO staff

Posted on 03/01/2014 2:52:30 AM PST by Candor7

As reports are coming in that Russia has placed 2,000 troops in Crimea, within the borders of Ukraine, President Obama said that “the United States will stand with the international community in affirming that there will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine.”

Charles Krauthammer responded on Special Report tonight saying, “The Ukrainians, and I think everybody, is shocked by the weakness of Obama’s statement. I find it rather staggering.”

Krauthammer thinks Obama’s statement is about “three levels removed” from actual action. He explained: Obama said “we will stand with the international community — meaning we are going to negotiate with a dozen other countries who will water down the statement — in affirming that there will be costs — meaning in making a statement not even imposing a cost, but in making a statement about imposing a cost — for any military intervention.”

“What he’s saying is we’re not really going to do anything and we’re telling the world,” Krauthammer said.

The problem with that accord is that it doesn’t apply here under international law.
This is a de facto civil war brewing. There is no integrity or borders at stake here.
Its a naked grab for power by the western revolutionaries who revolted against the legal government.
While we can debate the if and why fores or who is right or wrong, it still is a civil war and even Kerry was so advised by state.
Now when Russia brings up enough forces to roll back to Kiev, then they very well may do so, but even then the borders would remain the same.
Hell, they could even use that accord as legal justification to invade and thereby keep the territorial integrity of the Ukraine intact.

Are you seriously advancing the idea, that we should actually engage in a land war, with Russia, a few hundred miles from Volgograd (Stalingrad), to stop Russia from protecting its navy base at Sevastopol?

The Russian Federation can do whatever it wants in Sevastopol, but they are also in Crimea proper -- in Simferopol, fomenting secession.

No, of course we should not go to war, but diplomacy is an art of threats, bot only military but of recognition, sanctions, etc. Obama clearly signals he is not going to even try. That cowardice is not in American interest.

North Korea could take us on and we’d hide. Remember Benghazi? We let our own men be murdered - and sat on our hands while it was happening.

Nor should we do anything about the Ukraine. We've spent the best part of the last decade invading sovereign nations ourselves. In one of them, we installed an Islamic republic at the cost of over 3,000 American lives and who knows how many indigenous Christian ones.

What happened in the Ukraine was anarchy pure and simple. A democratically elected president was overthrown by a rabble that is the philosophical and spiritual counterpart of our own "Occupy" trash. Its agenda is secularist, humanist and socialist like that of the European Union. Its "values" are Western and I mean that in the worst sense of the word. It has no time for Russia's stand against the sodomite agenda and it longs to be free of Russian influence. It sees Ukraine's futue in the godless, socialist superstate that is the EU.

Way too many Freepers have their time clock stuck on 1962. This is not Hungary, 1956 or Prague 1968. This is the exact reverse. Putin is going to restore order and more power to him.

“What he’s saying is we’re not really going to do anything and we’re telling the world,” Krauthammer said.

As we should not. The EU will destroy Ukraine, George Soros and his buddies will have to find a different nation to loot.

He doesnt do anything about the invasion of our borders, why should he do anything about the invasion of another country’s borders?

This is the brutal fact why everyone in the main stream media and D.C. are running from for the past 25+ years.

And another big reason why the U.S. is in steady decline.

you didn’t fix anything, you made an excuse and it sounds a lot like what “the good Germans” were saying back in the early 30’s..

You're the one with the excuse pal. Blame the voters because the Vichy GOP fields candidate after candidate that doesn't want to win and no one wants to vote for? Blame the voters because the country club Republicans hate their conservative base? Sure, blame us for all your failures. You're no better than Obama who blames Bush for all his failures!

it isn’t a war crime for a each soldier not to wear a national insignia on a uniform

During that conflict, the U.S. military captured thousands of Taliban and al Qaeda forces, hundreds of whom were allegedly not complying with the rules of war, failing to wear uniforms with insignia clearly displayed, failing to carry their weapons openly, and failing to organize themselves in units subject to a hierarchical chain of command.

Rules of War

I said nothing about specifically the national flag. The RF forces wear, I believe, the tri-color arm badge, and a double-headed eagle cocarde. Al combatants in both WWI and WWII wore distinctive uniforms with insignia of nationality, unit and rank. That they remove them is at best a military ruse, -- but then the very use of a ruse qualifies as a hostile offensive operation, not a peace-keeping or protective mission.

The real purpose of Russian troops in Ukraine is to undermine the credibility of Nato

We cannot be sure of that. Obama's cowardice surely has that effect, but the RF's purpose is what it appears to be: fomenting secession of the Crimea and possibly other regions of Ukraine.

There is no integrity or borders at stake here

Sure there is. Inside Ukraine there may be unrest and tension, but there is also a central government recognized internationally; actions like sending troops in disguise is what foments a civil war.
