ARIZONA GOVERNOR VETOES RELIGIOUS FREEDOM BILL
AP ^ | 2/26/14 | BOB CHRISTIE

Gov. Jan Brewer on Wednesday vetoed a Republican bill that set off a national debate over gay rights, religion and discrimination and subjected Arizona to blistering criticism from major corporations and political leaders from both parties.

Brewer's decision defused a national furor over gay rights and religious freedom.

The bill backed by Republicans in the Legislature was designed to give added protection from lawsuits to people who assert their religious beliefs in refusing service to gays. But opponents called it an open attack on gays that invited discrimination.

The bill thrust Arizona into the national spotlight last week after both chambers of the state legislature approved it. As the days passed, more and more groups, politicians and average citizens weighed in against Senate Bill 1062. Many took to social media to criticize the bill, calling it an attack on gay and lesbian rights.

Many of us here are Christians. Look to the new Testament for salvation, not the old. You might also consider the context of the time of the old testament. Remember Sodom.

The reason for any feeling of defeatism is the perception by Conservatives that Obama and the Dems could eat live babies on national TV and still get the votes of the Blacks and other minorities and Liberals and the Gimme voters.

Along with enough dead, felons, illegals, imaginary people and dogs, cats and such to tip the elections.

That, combined by the unbelievable timidity, cowardice and supineness of the "leaders" of the so-called opposition--John Bonehead, Eric Cancer, Mitch McCommie, Goober Grahamnesty, John McStupid, and now Jan Screwer.

RE :”I figured she would veto as soon as I learned of this hoopla. Rarely does someone dicker and then do the right thing. “

Over at the gay rights channel they were listing about 7 to 10 corporations who they say were threatening AZ over this.

Apple, NFL, American Airlines Urge Ariz. Gov. Jan Brewer to Veto 'Wrong Message' Anti-Gay Bill (ABC Feb. 26, 2014)

Sort of ironic that these pro-gay-pro-amnesty corporations were presented to us as almost moral institutions when Romney-Ryan ran in 2012. 'Don't upset those job creators'

There are some lousy lawyers on the side of good here and some bad judges. Marriage is not a right - its a privilege; one does not ask permission of the state and get a license for a right.

Since its not a Right, then the civil rights argument is irrelevant.

"I don’t know AZ law. But a previous thread on this issue had indicated that AZ legislature can override governor veto with 2/3 vote, probably each House."

I wouldn't expect it. Fox News reported that many of those who drafted the bill have now reversed their positions and think it was a bad idea.

Guts and principle in the face of moral rot are becoming increasingly rare.

"I am as sick as anyone hearing about homosexuality 24/7, but Leviticus is not measurement of anything but the primitive tribal mentality of 5000 years ago. It also instructs unruly children to be killed among other atrocious things, so selective reading and application is hypocritical. If you fully apply Leviticus, you will have a nice cozy Talibanland that would make Mullah Omar proud."

Well, if you don't consider the Old Testament, or parts of it, to be God-inspired, I guess that's your problem. But you clearly have a misunderstanding of the reasons for the harsh judicial system given under the old covenant.

If so, I’m glad. I don’t get any particular jollies in giving any segment of Christian practice a worse rap than it deserves.

What I might be most concerned about is that the Roman Catholic church might believe the best a former homosexual could do would be to attain to a virtuous singlehood (if that is what is meant by chastity). Evangelical practice, at least, has sometimes seen better. Please don’t put a lid on what God can do.

You really aren’t “loving” a “fag” if you tell him that the best he can hope for is a life of “fagdom.”

Most Christians today who glibly cite Leviticus and stoning miss a few other factors.

(1) It applied to Sabbath breakers, too
(2) Two witnesses were required. Only one witness and the accused would skate
(3) Statute of limitations was to the next annual Atonement Day.

There was both a plan and grace, and without that we have a badly distorted picture.

It looks a lot to me like the need for multiple witnesses wasn’t just for certitude’s sake. Private sins were dealt with more leniently than notorious ones. They knew people would commit sins, but they did not want to allow it to become notorious.

Of course the faux-marriage rage is very notorious.

Ironically, if the multiple-witness rule had applied in modern sodomy prohibitions, the case by which the USSC had struck down these prohibitions would not have happened. A policeman happened into a bedroom for some other reason. One witness... suspect skates. No case, nothing for the USSC to make precedent from. The biblical grace had as much reason as the biblical harshness.

What a vile SOB.

From the looks and sound of this guy, it’s no wonder what side of the issue he falls on.

I warn you against judging anything on externals. That is only priding yourself.

It’s my understanding that there is an excellent support system in the church which of course is not well known and even condemned in pop culture to assist in what you are talking about

I’m sure they don’t need you if one battle scares you away and I’m not positive that battle should be called a loss, they can always reintroduce the bill next year and make it more specific which some including a writer at Breitbart said of the bill that it was a bit vague in wording. I’m sure your own state is standing strong. The laws are already on the Az books and this was a refinement. The Az. politicians got the spirit right if not the exact letter and just passing it in itself free of the deception by the media still shows states are willing to take a stand.

Look, I say this with all respect, so please keep that in mind.

You frequently make good points, and I often agree with your posts. But the tone of your, er...admonitions?...is sometimes a bit presumptuous, or self-important.

In view of that, I thank you not to "warn" me. I hope you'll take my advice to you in the spirit of constructive criticism.

What are the chances of the AZ legislature overriding the veto? If not, what about generating a proposition to amend the AZ constitution?
