Hang around Republican circles long enough and you will hear, We have got to stop these circular firing squads. The logic is simple; Republicans are killing themselves with internecine wars instead of going out and defeating liberals.
It is a great theory. Perhaps the best word for it is theory. As conservatives are discovering, though, what Republicans who complain about the circular firing squad really want is a semi-circular firing squad. These voices in the Republican Party want conservatives to stop shooting at them, while they try to take out insurgent conservatives.
Texas Senator Ted Cruz is probably the poster child for the semi-circular firing squad right now. Barack Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the left do not have to lift a finger to go after him. The Republicans are doing it for them.
Steve LaTourette is allegedly a Republican. He is a former representative from Ohio and his primary claim to fame is serving for eighteen years in Congress without any major accomplishments. He founded the badly misnamed Defending Main Street PAC after he retired from Congress to become a lobbyist. Defending Main Street PAC is allegedly a Republican PAC, but its mission is not to defeat Democrats; it is to stop the influence of the Tea Party. LaTourettes PAC is mostly funded by big Wall Street firms and left wing unions.
And LaTourette has made it his mission to go after Ted Cruz. He was recently on MSNBC in full semi-circular firing squad mode. He claimed it was reprehensible that Ted Cruz forced Republicans to live up to what they claim to believe and said that Ted Cruz should be forced out of the GOP.
Famed Conservative William F. Buckley founded the National Review. Today that once conservative standard-bearer is little more than a mouthpiece for the Republican Establishment. Mona Charen, a National Review writer, this week went on the attack against Cruz: Cruz Aims at His Own Side Again. He may be doing more damage to the GOP than are the Democrats.

It’s called cleaning your own house first.
It was NOT circular.
Romney attacked everyone including Sen. Thompson.
Then Romney attacked everyone, ending with Gov. Palin’s
children through surrogates (Rove et al)
Then Romney attacked every candidate from the Speaker on
down.
Then Romney defended Obama (except for a few minutes
in one debate) ... and gave up.
Then Romney and his Rove surrogates began attacking
the Tea Party for Obama and Romney’s partner Soros.
i had to go to the internet archive to look up this romney guy
Conservatives are still focused on stopping liberals. A lot of those liberals are in the GOP.
Dems have always taken care of their base. When will the GOP learn this?
Good article.
The GOP-e that do not reverse their leftward movement and come back to the right have to be dumped as soon as possible. They’re scared to death of Ted Cruz and tea party members for exposing their collaboration with democRats.
Go Ted Cruz!
Democrats are not communists (even Howard Stern sees that).
RINOs are yesterday’s democrats who despise conservatives, the religious right and those sympathetic to the tea party. It’s Ted Cruz or bust for many of the rest of us. No one at my home will ever vote for RINOs who have repeatedly proven they are the see-no-evil, hear-no-evil, say-no-evil political party that doesn’t deserve a dime of anyone’s donation $$$ let alone vote for them.
I wish the GOP WOULD kick Cruz out. They don’t have the guts. But if they did, it would be the official end of the party and they know it. Come on, cowards! Kick Cruz out of you elitist party!
Absolutely agree for most of them and then there’s a few like McLame and Linda, the in-your-face collaborators that dare the voters to oust them. Looks like Linda may be taking a hike.
Good article.
Be a conservative, run as a conservative, win as a conservative, govern as a conservative.
Anyone who hasn’t met that criteria is fair game for shootin’ at!
As it stands now, this broken and dysfunctional party has no hope of winning the Presidency. Establishment types are far more interested in destroying conservatives than defeating democrats.
What conservatives need to do is lay down an ultimatum..
“Either you move to the political right and redirect your fire at the left side of the aisle, or plan to be in a permanent minority status, because we are forming a new party.”
I asked my cousin who lives in Phoenix why they kept mclame and he told me he wasn’t as bad as the people running against him. Now that is sad. But probably an accurate assessment we all face.
I wish the GOP- E good luck. They left me. Adios firing squad

What RINOs really bask in ...
The GOPelite and many of the Congresscritters who are members of the GOPelite have become too comfortable.
They don’t mind losing the presidential elections. They don’t mind losing majority status in the House or Senate. They still get their turn at the money troughs. They still have their prestige and power and influence and the under-the-table ‘grants’ from lobbyists.
Some of them are so ‘comfortable’ that they gave up residences in the states they represent because it was too much of a hassle to maintain those residences. All they need is an address to use and many of their back-home cronies are more than happy to provide them a lounge chair or mailing address. That allows them to put their money toward their homesteads close to the seat of power — DC.
It is the conservatives, the newcomers, the Tea Party who are rattling the cages and making waves. The GOPelites see them as upsetting an acceptible apple-cart status quo. The GOPelites see as their enemy and competition those conservatives, not their friends from across the aisle. That is why they attack ‘their own’ because ‘their own’ really are not part of the exclusive club, and they don’t want to give up their own membership.
Agreed. It is impractical -- if not impossible -- to defeat the enemy (in this case, the Democrat Socialists who want to "fundamentally transform America") when you are being attacked viciously by members of your own caucus.
A thorough, no-holds-barred cleaning up of our own party is essential before we can even have a chance of defeating the formidable bloc of power consisting of the Democrat Socialist Party, the MSM, most of academia, and over 50 percent -- the growing non-tax paying portion -- of the American people.
Mitch McConnell is using his position and power to go after any GOP candidate who takes money from TEA Party groups he hates.
