American figure skater Johnny Weir has made quite an impression in Sochi working as a commentator for NBC during the Olympics.
He frequently sports bright outfits, proclaimed his fearlessness in the face of Russia's anti-gay policies, and painted the town red (OK, pink) with fellow commentator Tara Lipinski.
But on Wednesday, with his eyes on figure skating but his heart and mind on more pressing matters elsewhere, he used his fashion and his flamboyance to make a political statement.
As only he can.

The wife watches the food channel. Boitano had a show. And that was the theme song for the show. Pretty good sense of humor to use a South Park satire song for his show.
Couldn’t they have found a man figure skater to serve as a counter point to Tara?

Drama Queen Johnny can wear what he wants as long as he leaves the children alone. That’s what the Russian law is all about. The queers are free to be queer, just don’t touch the children. This should be the law everywhere.
Over in icenetwork.com’s forum, there is a discussion regarding Jonnny Wier and his wardrobe. The gal that started the thread titled it “beyond hate”. She is obviously a braniwashed liberal; had nothing but bad things to say about Scott Hamilton who has apparently expressed dismay over the attention-grabbing headlines that Wier has been getting. Hamilton must have stated that pro-gay antics by a few of the gay men in FS is hurting the sport, as it is keeping ‘normal’ boys and parents away from the sport. The gal was guilty of the very hatred which she accused Hamilton of. One of the guys on the forum said he agreed with Hamilton as exhibitionism by some of the gay guys (i.e. Wier) was harming the entire sport. Many others piped in that at most FS clubs/arena’s it is common to see only one boy in the group. They said they thought that was why the USA is not producing champion caliber male skaters, and that reverberates down to the pairs skating and the ice dancing as well. If our male skaters do not have enough competitive skaters in US competitions, they do not have to work as hard to win events. Oh boy, did the fur fly! The back and forth got nasty, mostly from the liberal gal’s side. She was so certain that anyone who dares to criticize Johhny Wier is filled with hatred. Totally brainwashed about it.
I have to agree with Hamilton about the overt behavior of Johnny Wier, as it feeds into the concept that all male FS are gay. To be honest, the percentage of gays in FS is higher than the average population’s, but I think Hamilton, is saying that Johnny’s behavior is keeping boys off the FS ice in the USA. Other countries do not have this much of a problem with the perception of gays in the sport.
I think if Weir was honest he’d admit they like that FS is “their” sport and happy to do what he can to keep it that way.
He’s marking his territory.
However, Johnny is very knowledgeable and regarding the skating, had done a good job in the commentary.
Because it takes incredible strength, coordination, balance, discipline and training as a first step - before one can even think about going for the level you see on your TV.
I was wondering when he was going to break out the mascara and lipstick.
