Freshman Senator Ted Cruz says many things that need to be said and says them well. Moreover, some of these things are what many, if not most, Americans believe wholeheartedly. Yet we need to remember that the same was true of another freshman Senator, just a relatively few years ago, who parlayed his ability to say things that resonated with the voters into two terms in the White House. Who would disagree that if you want your doctor, you should be able to keep your doctor? Who would disagree with the idea of a more transparent administration in Washington, or a President of the United States being a uniter instead of a divider?
There are many things like this that freshman Senator Barack Obama said that the overwhelming majority of Americans whether liberal or conservative would agree with. The only problem is that what he has actually done as President has repeatedly turned out to be the direct opposite of what he said as a candidate.
Senator Ted Cruz has not yet reached the point where he can make policy, rather than just make political trouble. But there are already disquieting signs that he is looking out for Ted Cruz even if that sets back the causes he claims to be serving.
Those causes are not being served when Senator Cruz undermines the election chances of the only political party that has any chance of undoing the disasters that Barack Obama has already inflicted on the nation and forestalling new disasters that are visible on the horizon.
ObamaCare is not just an issue about money or even an issue about something as important as medical care. ObamaCare represents a quantum leap in the power of the federal government over the private lives of individual Americans.

You know I am so fed up. What does the tea party mainly stand for? Fiscal responsibility, stop Obamacare and less government intrusion in our lives.
For this, we are allowing people to paint the Tea Party as bad guys?
Meanwhile, the democrats are espousing horrible things that equal marxism and racial revolutions, and the GOP is silent. Just incredible.
I think you're right.
How on earth did Senator Cruz end up in that row?! ... "you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy ...."
ah, I didn’t think of it that way
He’s brave - sitting in front of those back-stabbers.
WE, THE PEOPLE will prevail and we will prevail because the GOP-e is joined at the hip with the liberal left demonRat party.
Exactly so!
So we flay one of the most conservative Senators we have ever seen just to be fair minded? So the guy, Cruz, has a little political cache, a little narcissism, who the hell on capitol hill doesn’t. Brother Sowell, we love ya man... go ahead and get this out of your system, state your concerns then get behind the guy or go stand with the rest of the capitol hill lizards... or maybe you’ve been paid to throw a few jabs, capitol cronyism maybe?
Ted Cruz is looking out for America, not Ted Cruz. He is a selfless man guided by God and our Constitution. Someone tell Sowell that such a person exists.
Unless you consider the attitude of "Let's not remove this cancer, but let's make it a little less painful" to be a compelling slogan.
I am sure that will energize conservative voters... lol
That is a misleading statement, with just enough truth in it, to side-track real analysis!
The brutal fact is that we simply cannot trust certain Republican leaders. It is those leaders who are seeing to "purify" (i.e. purge the Republican Party) from any principled men & women, who will not accept a continued pattern of betrayal of/for our most cherished principles.
Senator Cruz, and many of us, who greatly admire him at Free Republic, recognize that this problem has to be faced, or none of us have a future. If the confused--for they are confused--weak kneed--for they are week kneed--Republicans, who only know how to retreat, would simply agree to a truce where we have truly open primaries, where the voters can decide, without the smears & efforts to stifle dissent, many of us would agree to embrace Reagan's llth Commandment.
Certainly we would agree to that, for the purpose that Thomas Sowell seems, at least to imply. But if the Republicans who only know how to retreat intend to persist in their present tactics against the more principled supporters of the Party, we have no choice but to pursue the course that so many here believe to be essential.
Finally, we would suggest that Dr. Sowell look a little more closely at the philosophic approach of those who actually made Hitler's triumph in Germany possible. It was not stalwart defenders of traditional values, like Ted Cruz--no indeed. It was those who knew how to retreat for temporary purposes.
It is an interesting game, citing historic phenomena to current purpose; but you need to tighten your focus, if you would not mislead.

I can’t recall strongly disagreeing with Dr. Sowell on one of his articles before.
Well said.
It seems to me the GOP-e is steadily going further left and that would explain their obsession in regards to tearing down the tea party.
Point of order......
All that is everysingle one of Republicans voted to oppose Obamadon’tcare.
The House including I think all Republicans voted 41 times to defund or repeal Obamadon’t care.
So, are you lying or just ignorant?
“I have a great deal of respect for Mr. Sowell but I have one question for him: When was the last time the GOP repealed a liberal law or did away with a liberal program?”
What he said.
Thomas Sowell engaging in Godwin’s law arguments?
Sorry Tom, but in this debate, you just lost.
But let's examine some of the differences.
His records are not sealed to the public.
He has been successful in school and in work.
He doesn't need a teleprompter to communicate.
He seems to have a good grasp of the constitution and it's meaning.
He is not a triangulator. He says what he means and he goes straight at it without regard to convention.
He seems to have some of the same skills as Obama but he appears to be on America's side instead of against it.
I always say I prefer experience as a governor or chief executive to a legislator without direct authority or responsibility for results. But given Cruz's positions so far, I would be inclined to give him a chance.
It has always been a close call, whether Socialism (both the Nazi & social Democratic varieties) is more evil than merely stupid. But all varieties, like the Communist variation, are always sold by Variations On Demonic Theme. It is because the useful idiots are focused on the wrong phenomena, that they keep trying to mislead the rest of us.
Dr. Sowell really should know better than the misdirection this article represents.

They originally opposed Obamacare, how many years ago? They refuse to defund it. Heck in 2012 Bonehead even said “It’s the law of the land and it will be funded”
