RAND PAUL: SECURE THE BORDER FIRST
Big Government ^ | 12 Jun 2013 | MIKE FLYNN

Posted on 02/15/2014 4:11:46 AM PST by neverdem

In a speech on Wednesday, Sen. Rand Paul outlined his views on immigration reform. Acknowledging the need for some legalization process for the 12 million illegal immigrants already here, Paul stressed that border security had to come first. Under Paul's plan, legalization wouldn't even be considered by Congress until the border was secured. This contrasts sharply with the approach outlined this week by Sen. Rubio, who said legalization had to come first.

Paul's plan would direct the Border Patrol and an Inspector General to certify to Congress when the border is secure. To verify that the border is secure, the report would have to be approved by Congress. Once that is accomplished, currently illegal immigrants could apply for probationary work visas.

This process of legalization, however, wouldn't happen all at once for the 12 million illegal immigrants. Each year, a bi-partisan panel would determine the number of work visas available. Congress would also have to annually review and re-certify that the border remained secure...

I know the money was agreed on by Appropriations...

MY own TN-3 congressman at the time Zack Wamp was on that committee and he voted for it...

Good plan, but it isn't going to done with a wall or a fence that cuts off river access.

Every one of them — McCain, Graham, Rubio, et al — promise that.

==

If it is so important, why are they not ENFORCING existing laws? Then, they wouldn’t need new immigration reform.

==

Senator Paul has fallen for (or expects us to believe) the same ole ‘secure the border’ canard politicians have been spouting for the last 15+ years.

If they were interested, if they were serious, they could do it now.

Senator, Hispandering doesn’t look good on ya.

Congress is a dysfunctional mess. Where is the border wall that was mandated by legislation? Um, doesn’t exist. Then you have a cadre of liberal judges who mock our laws and constitution, making up new “rights” to push political agendas. Finally, you have President Barack Obama who simply picks and chooses which laws to enforce.

Is there any reason whatsoever to think new immigration laws and an amnesty will change the situation? Some (not necessarily all) illegals will participate in an amnesty, but the incentives that drive illegal immigration would still exist. As 11+ (++?) are legalized, what’s to prevent more from coming in—a border and immigration system “enforced” by THIS president, THESE judges, and THIS Congress?

What a joke, except anyone with any sense shouldn’t be laughing.

No shame on YOU! ! ! ! ! !
If the GD borders can't be S-E-C-U-R-E-D. Not just fenced but totally secured, then they can kiss my grits about any so called amnesty. Just give them a green card and send them back home when the strawberries are picked.

Is it 12 million? That sounds like a low-ball number.

Under Paul's plan, legalization wouldn't even be considered by Congress until the border was secured.

Most plans offer amnesty and a promise to eventually, somehow, secure the border by technical means, meaning no fence. Later. Some day.

I still don't trust people who have proven themselves so untrustworthy on border security; until now, every time they promise more border security you find out they are just doing another shuffle.

I don't know what is so hard about this: Secure the border. Enforce the law. Let the chips fall.

Over time, the problem resolves itself if you do that. And the problem becomes much more manageable once you've closed off the spigot. And over time people find ways to adjust, they either go home, or they find some way to legalize themselves. You can't talk about amnesty when you have 20 million people here and another million a year coming. Stop the inflow, apply the law, and then you can pick out the difficult cases that require special handling. But don't talk to me about exceptions when your agenda is an open border.

Now now now. You are exaggerating. Remember when GWBush put 6,000 new NG on the border?

{quit laughing! He did, too! They were just shuffled in and out in groups of a few hundred for 2-week assignments that included washing BP vehicles and filing. Those are essential activities. Do you want BP driving around in dusty vehicles? Those NG were so essential that they were not even allowed to carry live ammo. What? You want the NG possibly shooting themselves in the foot or some such accident?}

The whole issue is a joke. If they passed amnesty today, in 5 years or 10 years the politicans would be trying to pass another similar bill -- because millions more illegals will have come over the border and we would be facing the same situation.

The figure is just enough to indicate a problem, but not bad enough to rile the masses.

The 'real' estimated number of illegals -- 15 years ago -- was nearly 40 million. Today, the 'real' number is probably closer to 60 million.

Most plans offer amnesty and a promise to eventually, somehow, secure the border by technical means, meaning no fence.

Under GWBush, they came up with the idea of a virtual fence, and expected us to believe it would be effective.

Later, in the first Obama term, HSD Sec Napilatino just turned the virtual fence off.

Its funny. People assume that without them, the fields wouldn’t get picked. My older relatives used to pick those very fields “back in the day”. I admit, things were different, it was harder to get on the dole, and there was a real resistance to taking handouts. So they would travel to California, rent a house for the kids, and work the fields. Some would go back home when the season was over, some stayed and eventually found other work.

But field work got done before. And it would get done even if they secure the border. The wages would go up is what will happen, but it would make very little difference in the price of rutabagas. Most of the cost of produce is in the handling after it leaves the field.
