House passes debt-ceiling increase with no add-ons
CNBC ^

Posted on 02/11/2014 2:35:53 PM PST by Red in Blue PA

This is a developing news story. An earlier version of the article follows:

House GOP leaders announced Tuesday they will advance this week an increase in the government's borrowing cap that's free of any add-ons. A vote is scheduled for Tuesday night because of the threat of a winter storm.

House Speaker John Boehner announced the plan after a poll of the Republican rank and file failed to show enough support for a plan to tie the hike in the debt limit to a plan to reverse a recently passed cut to military pensions.

The Ohio Republican said he expected virtually all of President Barack Obama's Democratic allies to vote for the so-called clean debt cap increase but that he would be one of the few Republicans to back it in the vote.

Na. Those “resources” will have already have been looted by then.

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone were to sometime soon open the door to the vault and all that will remains are the pallets that all of the gold sat on.

real battle is over Obama care

Are you planning to fight the battle over Obama care with the same generals that fought the battle over the spending limit?

You do not consider the fact that politics is the art of the possible.

It is correct to be for less debt but it is incorrect to lose blood and treasure in an attack up the valley of death by the light cavalry

The point was made twice in recent time. The raw political power required to prevail is lacking. The massed artillery presently controls the valley

You are correct about this particular battle. However, don’t discount the fact that the GOP is not giving a reason for their base to vote for them. They are not fighting enough to keep the rest of us in the war.

Perhaps the nation is too far gone on the debt cycle, but the day of reckoning is coming and I expect the GOP to honor their platform, tell the American people repeatedly, and pick some battles they can win.

We are in serious trouble and nobody in D.C. seems to consider what will happen beyond the 2 year election cycle.

The debt suspension was put in s540 “in the nature of a substitute” by the Rules committee.

See, over on the right:

To designate the air route traffic control center located in Nashua, New Hampshire, as the “Patricia Clark Boston Air Route Traffic Control Center”. (as referred to House)’

The raw political power required to prevail is lacking.

Is it "power" -- or is it "will" -- that the Republican leadership is lacking?

“Time to sit the next election out. How does that help make things better?”

Here are a few ways for starters:

1. It forces a focus on other strategies that have a hope of success.

2. It saves time and resources that could be put to use in other ways. How many hours and dollars are spent debating the merits of the various candidates when there really isn’t any substantive difference? Better to spend the resources and time on something else.

3. The only time in our history when a major political party was replaced was over 150 years ago when the Whigs collapsed. The Whigs had to collapse to clear the way for another party to ascend. One of the factions of our uniparty is going to have to go away for another political party to have a chance. That isn’t going to happen so long as people show up to vote for the both the gop and ‘rat wings of the uniparty.

No dollar amount. It suspends the debt limit until March 15, 2015
It’s the same thing the thieves did last time.

I suspect that Boehner had more Republicans who would have voted with him but this was all he needed.

Yes. I don’t doubt Boehner released a few Reps. Boehner’s go to CYA list is leadership, committtee chairmen, blue state pansy RINOs and drinking buddies. That would get him to 40-50 GOP votes easily I would think.

This year, the battle will be fought and won, not in the assembled House but in the districts maintaining the House and gaining the Senate

That is a a comforting though for those currently being assaulted by the IRS and the cancer patients losing their insurance. Just wait for the election, the GOP says, then we’ll help!

There is no point in taking casualties at this time in a battle that can not be won

A real battle has NEVER been fought. When Cruz and Lee attempted to fight it via a skirmish action on their own because the GOP refused to fight - the Ruling Class hacks said the same thing you just did - that there is no reason to take casualties in a battle that cannot be won.

So the SURRENDER MONKEYS continue to lecture about the moral high ground of surrender without thought about the casualties on our children, our economy and liberty.

The real battle is over Obama care and it is being won.

Despite your Tokyo Rovian talking points - there is no battle being fought over ObamaCare - NONE. When Obama violates the Constitution and makes changes to the law by decree, your party sees, hears and speaks no evil against His Heinous. Instead they tell us that ObamaCare is the law of the land, get used to it.

The time to win is coming

By doing nothing??? By capitulating and surrendering to the MarxoFascist Democrats every single time??

I laugh at the total disconnect from reality of you beltway types. That this is just another 'political game' to be chessed while the facts demonstrating that we have been overthrown in a velvet Marxist coup is ignored.

Refusing to pay the credit card bill is not fiscal responsibility. We should instead work to stop running up the bills in the first place.

You sound like Obama. So we should just shut up and let the government continue to use the credit card with no consequence and no limit?
No, of course not. That's actually the opposite of what I said (and I'll ignore your insult).

We must absolutely stop the out-of-control spending. But the place to do that is when the spending is actually done, in the budget process, not by defaulting on our credit card bill.

The RINOs are hoping that you won't notice their big-spending ways so long as they refuse (or threaten to refuse) to pay the check when it comes due. Don't fall for it.

We can't afford the spending in the first place. Playing games with default lets politicians pretend that we can, since they won't do the hard work of actually cutting a single bloated program. And then they go through this farce to pretend that they're actually the proper stewards of the public purse.

This isn't the time to pick this fight.* We need instead to hold so-called "conservative" politicians accountable for the credit card bills they ring up. Pretending we won't pay the bill now is as disingenuous as it is dangerous.

* (and in case anyone misunderstands my meaning, we must must MUST win the real fight or lose our country)

Thank you bert...you have discerned it correctly.

Why create an avenue for Obama to blame the GOP for creating chaos, best to keep the focus on Obamacare and Obama in this year’s election, and not have the debt ceiling a distraction.

Amen, and Stuart Varney said so on Fox this AM...I wish the FR people would quit whining and fight the opposition and not destroy the GOP from within....United we stand, and divided we fall. I have never seen the divisiveness so strong here. Some must be democrats pretending to be conservatives to stop others from voting?? Who knows, as I am an Independent Conservative, who sees this infighting as destructive!
