This is a developing news story. An earlier version of the article follows:
House GOP leaders announced Tuesday they will advance this week an increase in the government's borrowing cap that's free of any add-ons. A vote is scheduled for Tuesday night because of the threat of a winter storm.
House Speaker John Boehner announced the plan after a poll of the Republican rank and file failed to show enough support for a plan to tie the hike in the debt limit to a plan to reverse a recently passed cut to military pensions.
The Ohio Republican said he expected virtually all of President Barack Obama's Democratic allies to vote for the so-called clean debt cap increase but that he would be one of the few Republicans to back it in the vote.

$20 Trillion here we come. A stones throw away now.
And brave sir Robin bravely ran away.
And you KNOW that a lot of those 199 votes “against” where CYA votes where they knew it was going to pass anyway.
Psychopaths, all of them politicians! Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!Spend!...
COWARDS.
Curious. At what point (debt) does it all fall apart? 20 trillion? 25 trillion?
This is what sunk the Soviet Union.
China is buying gold mines around the world and stocking up on physical investments in gold, with what some say is an attempt to build a gold backed currency.
Our politicians raise the debt ceilings with absolutely no provisos.
Which politicians are more responsible for their country?
There is no point in taking casualties at this time in a battle that can not be won
The real battle is over Obama care and it is being won. That outcome will substantially reduce the casualties when the battle occurs on our ground
The time to win is coming
That is the same argument I hear from the DC beltway types each time the debt ceiling issue comes up.
Guess what? Doing that never solves the problem.
I am wondering what collateral US might offer to our lenders to cover our debt? Our natural resources?
We just had alla them CONgress critters cornfused with Reps that give a (BLEEP!) for their national interest
(GROSS flatulence!)
It’s hard to tell one UniParty member from another. We need a second party.
How far away is the cliff now?
“There is no point in taking casualties at this time in a battle that can not be won”
I think we could have won something. Just open up a list of really bad spending and cut it from the budget. Obama and Reid spike the bill and then you cave. But at list the list of stupid spending got publicized.
I am GOPe and even I think just caving is bad. Ok, we can’t win, but we can make a stink and at least publicize some of the worst, indefensible, not even a democrat could disagree spending abuses.
It gives a lie to why the GOP should remain in control of the House. The GOP has the votes to stop a clean version but would rather provide the votes needed by the Dems to pass it. And they think this will help them with the base?
You do not consider the fact that politics is the art of the possible.
It is correct to be for less debt but it is incorrect to lose blood and treasure in an attack up the valley of death by the light cavalry
The point was made twice in recent time. The raw political power required to prevail is lacking. The massed artillery presently controls the valley
Perhaps Fort Knox. The land, the buildings, the content. All of it.
What a country!
Kumbaya the new anthem!
R U kidding? The Dems are hanging in the ropes reeling asking for a knock out blow and what does Boner do? He goes limp.
And the incompetency, corruption and un-Americanism goes on and on and on and the greedy politicians get richer and richer and Americans once again get the shaft.
