A class that teaches you how to eat or even the basic social skills to get a job – is it really necessary?
Some companies think so, particularly for the generation of twenty-somethings and younger dubbed millennials.
While they are undoubtedly social-media savvy, living their lives online in 140 characters or fewer, many of the younger potential workers lack very basic skills because of it, according to some employers.
“Writing skills -- people don’t write as much as they used to. They’re texting, so they forget to write in complete sentences and articulate their written skills professionally,” said Jeff Dunn, an Intel campus relations manager.
Even if a cover letter scores the millennial an interview, many still flunk their face-to-face meetings because they aren’t being professional, according to the HR Policy Association.
According to many hiring managers, a small number of millennials during an interview use slang or overly casual language, respond to a text message, pick up a phone call, or even have their parents or pets accompany them.
“Everything about you shows. If your email address is screwloose dot com or tequilagirl, that shows (you’re) unprofessional,” said Gina Snyder, a business etiquette trainer.
The need for professionalism at all times is why Sacramento State students attended an event at the college recently, to learn proper dining etiquette from Snyder.
“What should I order? What knife should I use? Where do my solids go? Where do my liquids go? That’s something I’m interested in learning,” student Melissa Aguirre said.
Employers are also calling the attitudes of younger people alarming.
In a recent annual survey by the Center for Professional Excellence, many of the 400 human resources executives surveyed said young employees often appear arrogant in interviews and appear at the office with a sense of entitlement.
“Recruiters want to know: Are you ready to cross the line? Are you ready to cross the line to become a professional, to step into my company?” Snyder said.
More than half the employers surveyed also said millennials are spending too much time on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

This young lady sounds like a perfect fit for the Obama administration or an Ambassador.
From what I’ve seen, I think it is something far more basic— like showing up for work when scheduled and working until the job is done.
I cannot fathom that these companies, in these economic times, are giving priority to whether or not their workers know how to use a fork properly or how to correctly set up drinking glasses and drinking without making too much noise. Though the total lack of ability to put together a coherent sentence is for sure a major issue.

It depends on what job a person holds. If part of one’s job requires social contacts ‘in person’ with a client or clients, then yes, basic finishing school training may be required.
I will bet that a business lunch with a Millennial is a frightening scene. No one really wants to see what it is you are chewing while you are chewing it. Eating salad with your hands is a no-no and ordering a Jello-shooter as an after dinner cocktail is off putting.
I think a big part of the reason our company (and probably others) cut millennials an excessive amount of slack is the fear that we are too heavy in boomers and the those just below boomers in age. We are.
We are. Most of us not only want to work, we need to work. Plus, here in the Pittsburgh area, we probably have a better class of millennials than elsewhere in the country.
You can still encounter high school and college kids working at the mall, construction, fast food or other entry level jobs because we haven't been run over by illegals like much of the rest of the country.
This means our millennials are at least better trained to work than elsewhere.

I have always hated this type of lunch. I do the dressing professional thing just fine but I have nerve damage down in my arm which means I can’t really control the knife and fork that well no matter how hard I try. I simply tell the people I am with why I am not eating and they are generally fine with it.
I do maintenance on CNC machines, etc.
Sometimes we can only hope the person submitting a work order is on our shift, so we can talk with them and try to figure out what they really meant.

Many of those from younger Americans are truly pathetic.

I like where I live. North Georgia County 30,000 people. Despite having a high percentage on welfare (20% on SNAP, etc.). The younger people always address an older person as ma’am or ‘sir’ and are very polite.
It is one of very few places where you also won’t see all the entry level jobs overrun by illegals. [PS, the food they make and serve in the drive thrus, etc. looks like the pictures on the menus. Tastes better than down in Atlanta, too, I think.]
I am teaching someone about this right now and he’s 43.

I'm certainly not defending the millennials, but why should they take their jobs seriously when companies don't take their employees seriously.

I was asked to do something in our lodge the other day.
I had to stop and think how I was going to do this task at each station.
Some of the guys were telling me how to do it. A usual correction thing that happens but, it can be frustrating for some to do a trial by fire thing.

Uhh, is she still referring to dinning etiquette? Or, has she moved on to, shall we say, post-dinning etiquette?
I love it. Five years ago I was pessimistic towards whether I could continue working in my chosen profession well into my 60’s and the future looks brighter now that I know what the alternative is for employers.
Shocking result of years of being told you are entitled to anything you want, and Mommy and or Daddy will hover nearby every failure to ensure you it was not your fault. /S
I doubt that where a fork or where the knife goes is the real point here, however; they added this for effect as these kids are not very smart. Let me give you an example of a kid, actually an adult and a niece. The girl was born in 1980, and; she has a degree in computer sciences, yet; she works off and on in bars. She weighs 250 or so, sat on my couch pretended she wanted a job, and; I had my neighbor find three jobs with then HCA 6-8 years ago for her. The girl never looked me in the eye. This was over some while ago, but; my wife’s son is lazy, plus a free loader. I noticed she kept pushing buttons on her cell phone. I inquired- “What are you doing?” She was TWEETING. What the hell is that I asked? What class and manners she had- I thought. I may as well as have been talking to the damn wall. The cat would have been better as she would have looked at me. I soon was told by my neighbor to ask her why she never contacted anyone of the three for an interview? The lazy ass did not want to be bothered to update her Resume. She is obese, ill mannered, and I would not hire her. I have never invited her back, and; no, I refuse to help her get a job.
