I dont like goodbyes NBC does but I dont care for them, an emotional Jay Leno said, kicking off a star-studded final broadcast show as host of The Tonight Show. Tonight is our last show for real. I dont need to be fired three times — I get the hint, Leno joked to a friends-and-family studio audience as he ended his 22-year run Thursday night. It’s his second very-last-time-as-host — having been pushed aside in 2009 by NBC to make way for Conan O’Brien, who lasted seven months.
Ive got to tell you, the outpouring from people has really been touching. Anthony Weiner sent me a photo of his ______ looking really sad.
In sharp contrast to the last time Leno celebrated his very last night as host of Tonight Show in 2009 — when, ever the team player, he had OBrien as his final nights guest — tonights show was packed with celebrities including President Obama. Longtime pal Garth Brooks performed his hit The Dance. And a cast of A-listers including Oprah Winfrey, Jack Black and Carol Burnett performed with Billy Crystal and The Shut Your Von Trapp Family Singers, the Rogers & Hammerstein tune from The Sound Of Music, So Long, Farewell with lyrics changed to suit the occasion. (Watch a clip below.) The show ended with Leno in tears as he thanked the audience, calling the Tonight Show crew his family and wishing his successor Jimmy Fallon well.
But first, Leno mulled exactly how long 22 years is.
- “Heres how long ago it is. When I started hosting, marijuana was illegal and you could smoke cigarettes anywhere you wanted.
- “Twenty two years ago, guys actually had to go to newsstands for porn, can you imagine?”
- “So much has happened. You know the saddest part OJ never found the real killers.”
Never watched one episode yet I am a fan of Jay Lenos Garage channel on you tube. Caught clips and news bites here and there on the radio or internet yet not one episode of the tonight show after carson era..... The celebrity and political trash he had on his show was just not for me or mine.
His guests on the last show are pretty much why I didn’t ever watch.
Hope he keeps the Garage Show as I like Leno. Never have liked NBC.
Vote with my dollars between elections as you know young lady.....:o)
Stay safe !
I really liked Jay. Funny. Insightful. A good guy.
Jimmy Fallon is none of those things. (am reminded of what he did to Michelle Bachmann). absolutely no class.
Fallon has not an ounce of class. Will never watch his show.
That was a great last show —
Oprah — if it were me I’d buy them all a car!!!
LOL
It’s all downhill for NBC late night from here.
JAY LENO SET FREE!.....
Now that he’s a short timer, Jay does not feel constrained to stay within the network guidelines of “no Obama criticism and staying politically correct” — what a breath of fresh air.
> “I was going to start off tonight with an Obama joke, but I don’t want to get audited by the IRS.”
>
>
> On NSA surveillance: “We wanted a president who listens to all Americans - now we have one.”
>
>
> On a new IRS commissioner: “He’s called ‘acting commissioner’ because he has to act like the scandal doesn’t involve the White House.”
>
>
> On closing the Guantanamo prison for terrorists: “If he really wants to close it, turn it into a government-funded solar power company. The doors will be shut in a month.”
>
>
> Concerning the Benghazi , Associated Press, and IRS scandals: “Remember in the old days when President Obama’s biggest embarrassment was Joe Biden?”
>
>
> On Obama saying he didn’t know about the IRS scandal: “He was too busy not knowing anything about Benghazi to not know anything about the IRS.”
>
>
> “The White House has a new slogan about Benghazi : Hope and change the subject.”
>
>
> “It’s casual Friday, which means that at the White House, they’re casually going through everybody’s phone calls and records.”
>
>
> “It is not looking good for President Obama. Today his teleprompter took the fifth.”
>
>
> “Fox News has changed its slogan from ‘Fair and Balanced’ to ‘See, I told you so!’”
>
>
> On Obama’s commencement address: “He told the young graduates their future is bright unless, of course, they want jobs.”
>
>
> On a Chicago man who set a record for riding a Ferris wheel: “The only other way to go around and around in a circle that many times is to read the official report on Benghazi .”
>
>
> On White House claims of ignorance on the scandals: “They took ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ out of the Pentagon and moved it into the White House.”
>
> now the last, and I think best!—
>
> “These White House scandals are not going away anytime soon. It’s gotten so bad that People in Kenya are now saying he’s 100 percent American.”
I didn’t watch late shows either. All liberal all the time. Leno probably lost his union card ‘cause he turned a wee bit libertarian is what I’m told, but that’s a bit wacked out, too. Watched a libertarian on Stoessel the Libertarian the other day saying that there should be no borders, illegals should come and go as they please, and that libertarians support such “total freedom”.
Idiot. That attitude is actually support for the end of the USA that has such a strict hold on freedom that he gets to live in his never-never-land utopian dreams.
Get rid of THIS American freedom, doofus, and you’ll be scrubbing pots for the aristocrats after you finish working their fields.
In any case, Leno was just another liberal. He was a nice liberal like Joe Liebermann, that is, there was no knife during unimportant times.
I recall there was a skit between Leno and ventriloquist Jeff Dunham and Walter (old man) many years ago. Walter indicated he knew what “NBC” stood for. Leno asked what was that, and Walter said “Nothing But Crap”. Still rings true today.
I rarely missed a Johnny Carson show!
Leno never caught on with me, but I didn’t rush to change the channel.
I’ve never seen the Garage Show you mention.
I’m staying safe, darling guy!
XOXOXO
I didn’t see THAT show, and happy I didn’t.
I did see Leno’s ugly treatment of Ted Cruz.
I don’t like Fallon and I’ll not watch his idiot show.
NBC wants youth. Great. LOL. See ya.
Hi sodpoodle!!!
So good to see beautiful you!!!
I also liked his ‘interviews in the streets.’
Dumb voters everywhere.
Yep, Letterman is nothing but a creep and he is NOT funny. He’s mean.
Amen.
You’re right.
LOLOLOL. That’s right.
I hope NBC loses a lot of money on Fallon.
He wasn't too happy when Leno got Carson's slot, and it must have burned him that Leno got exposed as routine guest on his (Lettermans’) own show.
So NBC got to see them with competing monologs on the same shows to make a comparison, as did the audience.
The only way an open border would be feasible is if there were no welfare state at all. No government benefits for anyone, ever. Then all the trough feeding socialists would leave for the greener pastures of Socialist Countries in South America and everyone who wanted to be in America would have to work or starve.
People used to come to America because of the opportunity to better themselves. These days they come for the opportunity to get free money and food and avoid taxes and have anchor babies.
We are at fault because we let them. We dangle the carrot of a welfare state with unlimited power to print money to pay them for doing nothing.
It’s 18 Trillion now with no end in sight.
Mornin’, folks...
Loved Johnny Carson. The man ad “Class Act” written all over him, and he was very funny. He and Ed McMahon had a real comedic interplay between them that was always entertaining, and Johnny was a natural when it came to “funny”.
Leno is OK, but a bit too liberal for me. That being said, he never struck me as being a complete lunatic lib as most of the other nighttime hosts others are. I think he got a raw deal from NBC.
Onyx, you said “NBC has lost it’s way.” You are giving them the decent benefit of the doubt, because you are a very gracious person. But to “lose one’s way” implies that one merely got confused; NBC, MSNBC, and other media organizations are so infested with libs that they know EXACTLY what “way” they chose, and what agenda to push.
And it is not the American agenda.
