(FOXNEWS) BUFFALO, N.Y. Youve heard of flash mobs? Behold the Mass mob. Playing off the idea of using social media to summon crowds for parties or mischief, mobs of Buffalo-area Roman Catholics have been filling pews and lifting spirits at some of the citys original, now often sparsely attended, churches.
It works this way: On a given Sunday, participants attend Mass en masse at a church theyve picked in an online vote and promoted through Facebook and Twitter. Visitors experience the architecture, heritage and spirit of the aging houses of worship and the churches once again see the numbers they were built for, along with a helpful bump in donations when the collection baskets are passed.
I call these churches faith enhancers. You cant help but walk in and feel closer to a higher power, said Christopher Byrd, who hatched the idea in Buffalo last fall and has organized two Mass mobs so far, both of which drew hundreds. Hes heard from other cities about starting their own.

Love it! Wonderful use of social networking
if only we could find our backbone,we could overtake all the evil in the world...
True. Let your alms be given in secret so that your heavenly father may reward you in secret also. (or something like that).
This sort of thing smacks of exhibitionism.
listened to a local call in show discuss this.
A man called in to praise this act and said that more people should be in church.
When the host asked him what church pew he filled, the called danced a bit and said, I don’t go to church, I am sort of a nature guy.
Fool like him doesn’t realize that his half baked perspective is why pews are empty everywhere.
Catholics who attend church are far less inclined to vote for RATs. I suspect the same is true of Protestants as well.
He's less the reason that pews are empty than the hollowed out preachers who teach the leftist Gospel of social justice rather than the real Gospel of Jesus Christ.
But, yes, for those who make that excuse, they need to find a church which preaches the real Gospel of Jesus Christ. Even if they have to switch brands to do so.
Not church growth per se, only the "we'll go if we make it an event" brief appearance of growth. Only one church gets a boost, and only for one Sunday.
Ping.
This is so cool.
.
It's a safe bet that THESE are not the ones voting for the Rats.
People who attend religious servicescregularly indeed are far more likely to vote Republican. I recall that when Michael Barone analyzed the exit polls from the 2000 presidential elections he found that the only group whose Bush vote percentage did not increase among the subset who attend religious services on a regular basis were black Protestants (who voted overwhelmingly for Gore irrespective of how religious they were).
Doesn’t surprise me since that particular crowd uses Christianity as a fig leaf for their main religion of getting free stuff from the government.
A blessed day to you.
God Bless those Catholic flash mobs!
AMEN!
h/t to lightman for the ping!
I think that is wonderful. They might turn a few stragglers that came along for the “event” into regular attenders. The financial boost, although temporary, I’m sure is welcome in these churches. We have a church in Kansas City that did a major turn around with a wonderful, dear old priest. People drive from all over the KC area to attend Our Lady of Good Counsel. It’s packed with homeschool families on a regular basis. Beautiful old church in a run down neighborhood. Who knows what might come of this? I love it! Would be nice to see it spread to other cities.
