Heroin overdose deaths across the country are spiking as a deadly new variant of the drug mixed with a powerful painkiller is spreading from New Hampshire to Washington State.
The lethal combination of heroin and fentanyl, an opiate used to soothe the pain of cancer patients, is blamed for about 100 deaths from coast to coast. It is variously labelled as bud ice, income tax and theraflu, authorities say.
The hardest hit states in the epidemic are Maryland, with more than three dozen deaths since September, and Pennsylvania, with almost two dozen this month alone, according to reports.

FYI
wait are you trying to say heroin is bad for you?
This ain’t your daddy’s heroin any more.
That’s one way to clean ‘em out.
Sounds like the perfect drug for criminal executions.
I wonder if that was what Philip Seymour Hoffman (the great actor who died today) was using. It said that the heroin baggies found in the apartment where he died haven’t been seen since 2008. There was some speculation that he was combining this with Fenfenyl.
That said, prayers for him. And for all the sad people who die of drug overdoses.
The infamous “Tango and Cash” smack that killed a number of junkies in the 1990s was also tainted with fentanyl. Supposedly, some of the users died within seconds of the injection.
Fentanyl, as I understand it (medical types, feel free to correct me here), exerts a powerful suppression effect on the respiratory system, far more so that heroin or other opiods/opiates.

Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead of an apparent drug overdose
Aye yes, we wonders...
“white heroin responsible for at least 100 deaths across the country”
The object is responsible, not the user. LOL
The heroin isn’t responsible for the deaths. The people who used the heroin are responsible for their own deaths.
like that kind of logic is going to change it
One of our FReepers is on the EMT team in upstate NY and was called to a case of a victim on this substance on Thursday night. Not sure whether the stricken on lived, or not. I think it was not.
She said she resented the use of the term “overdose”. Since the substance is illegal, there is no dose. Any dose could be the victim’s last since the drug is unregulated. She thinks it should be noted that the victim died from ingestion of an “illegal substance”. “Overdose” is misleading.
A friend of mine nearly died from a dihydrogen monoxide overdose.
I wonder if that substance is regulated.
Look, there are two kinds of heroin — there’s the bad kind, and then there’s the ... wait. Okay. There’s one kind of heroin ...
If it were black heroin it would be rasis
To make matters worse, most of the heroin in the US is Mexican brown heroin, which is weaker than white heroin.
Fentanyl is approximately 100 times more potent than morphine, with 100 micrograms of fentanyl approximately equivalent to 10 mg of morphine and 75 mg of pethidine (meperidine) in analgesic activity.
Estimated LD50 for humans is about 2.1mg for a 150 pound user, which means at that dose, half the people of that weight would die.
Mixing heroin and Fentanyl is downright insane.
Dihydrogen monoxide is dangerous in large quantities. it can cause clothing to shrink too.
