New frontrunner in GOP’s 2016 New Hampshire primary: Mitt Romney, of course

Gut-check time: Am I enough of a hack to blog a poll as silly as this purely to goose my readers with a frisson of anxiety over another Romney run? Even by the usual hot-garbage standards of early presidential polling, this one’s hard to redeem. They’ve got a guy in the lead who’s definitely, assuredly not running — per the “Mitt” documentary, he only ran in 2012 because he knew he was next in line for the nomination — and they’ve omitted two guys in Marco Rubio and Scott Walker who very well might be. How informative is a poll like that? Even on a slow news day, it would take an unusually desperate hack to treat it as noteworthy.

So here you go.

If Romney were to run, he currently holds a lead in the New Hampshire Republican primary, with 25% of the vote. While Romney says he is not likely to run, it is instructive to note that he continues to cast a shadow over the primary at this early stage. He serves as a convenient “parking lot” for Republican voters who are waiting for other candidates to develop.

Of non-Romney candidates, Rand Paul has 18% of the vote, essentially tied with Chris Christie (17%), with Jeb Bush receiving 13%. Ted Cruz (7%) and Bobby Jindal (5%) round out the GOP candidates tested in this wave of the PurplePoll.

There’s truth to that, actually. Mitt “leading” the field here is tantamount to “undecided” leading the field....

But is he?

Well, let's just say that the camera likes Mitt better - and leave it at that.

Stop!

Get hold of yourself.

He squashed every conservative, no excuses.

Then he ushered in Obama.

He was the father of Obamacare.

Gay marriage, for abortion before he was against it.

His VP pick is the single most energetic and effective tone deaf Pr**K pro amnesty, take away promised vets benefits

Just stop it

I’ll betcha 25% of Freepers would enthusiastically back Mitt, given all the butthurt I read about us ‘purists’ not voting for him last time.

Hillary would have a running mat, but you could put Mitt on the bumper sticker.

What is the question?

Mitt is a disaster He needs to go away

Probably because a percentage of freepers are GOP to the core. But don’t you dare question their conservatism as they excuse every lib and lib tactic their chosen ones use to step on conservatives.

And people wonder why we can’t come together to oust the Rinos. We can’t even ‘hold our own feet to the fire”.

Oh we COULD. But we don’t want to ‘offend’ our online friends’. That’s what’s really most important after all. America is secondary.

I think Ronald Reagan was the last "right one" we have had. I am beginning to wonder if we will ever have another one.

Mitt, you blew it last time by wimping out at the end rather than going after Ozero and all of his misdeeds. You’re a nice guy - too nice. To defeat Democrats you have to be as vicious as they are. Offense wins, defense doesn’t.

I think it makes perfect sense to run Romney again, or maybe McCain if there is another economic meltdown. The reason is that the Dems will nominate Obama and we don’t want to look racist by nominating a candidate that could actually win.

Mitt is a neighbor of mine when he's in NH, so I will say this:

He is extremely qualified for high-level executive employment, and he's a nice man.

One of the bad things about the rapidly accelerating demise of the Republic is the nomination and election of unqualified people ("Obama" being exhibit #1). The Hillary boosters who call her "the most qualified candidate ever" are another example.

Between 1788 and 2008, a sitting US Senator was elected President only twice, and both were terrible executives. In 2004 and 2008, 3 of the four candidates were sitting US Senators. This represents the ascendancy of style over substance, and is a problem.

Mitt is not a conservative in policy terms, and he was a terrible candidate. I hope he enjoys San Diego, and I hope he enjoys retirement.

But had he managed to be elected, we would have been better off than we are.
