A federal judge on Monday sentenced eco-saboteur Rebecca Rubin to five years in prison -- less than what prosecutors sought for the former fugitive from Canada.
Rubin, voice shaking, apologized to her family, the court, firefighters as well as targets of the Animal Liberation Front and Earth Liberation Front.
"I was so convinced at the righteousness of my beliefs, that I chose to ignore my own wrongdoing," Rubin said.
Chief U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken, who presided over the sentencing hearings in 2007 of Rubin's co-conspirators in Eugene, praised Rubin's statement, calling it "the most thoughtful, well-stated, honest, unvarnished apology/explanation."
"I understand more than you know when you work in a democracy that all things look like they're black and white when you're young," the judge said. "And there are so many shades of gray."
Federal prosecutors had asked Aiken for a 7 ½-year prison sentence for Rubin. Rubin's attorney argued for five years.
Rubin pleaded guilty last October before Aiken to arson, attempted arson and conspiracy to commit arson in Oregon, Colorado and California as part of the underground Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front. She participated in four crimes, including planning the eventual $12 million fire that destroyed a ski resort under construction in Vail, Colo., in 1998.

Rebecca Rubin in her younger days
An older article in the Eugene Weekly News on "The Family."
Joseph Mahmoud Dibee and Josephine Sunshine Overaker still remain fugitives.
How many folks were harmed by her behavior?
/johnny
My eyes were just harmed by seeing her picture. Eeeesh, that’s one ugly lib.
That is one ugly dude. Definitely guilty.
Luckily none that I know of physically but they destroyed millions in property loss.
Of course arsonists like these ignore the fact they can kill and maim.
Eye bleach
Rebecca Rubin is no different than the eco-Nazis at EPA.
The EPA is a seditious organization involved in eco-terrosism sanctioned by the chief Mau-mau terrorist, Buckwheat.
I CAN SEE AGAIN!!!!
While in the joint she’ll take correspondence courses from some diploma mill, graduate with a PhD and upon release will be hired by a prestigious university. Her book will receive glowing reviews by the New York Times and she’ll receive a Pulitzer for it.
Those wacky northwestern girls. Hey, isn’t Rachel Corrie Day coming up soon?
Yep!!
Damn...!!!
With a mug like that probably been eating a lot beaver and them rubbed off on her. ;)
Nesmith! Where are you? The Monkees turned out to be responsible.
When the world and I were young,
Just yesterday.
Life was such a simple game,
A child could play.
It was easy then to tell right from wrong.
Easy then to tell weak from strong.
When a man should stand and fight,
Or just go along.
But today there is no day or night
Today there is no dark or light.
Today there is no black or white,
Only shades of gray.
I remember when the answers seemed so clear
We had never lived with doubt or tasted fear.
It was easy then to tell truth from lies
Selling out from compromise
Who to love and who to hate,
The foolish from the wise.
But today there is no day or night
Today there is no dark or light.
Today there is no black or white,
Only shades of gray.
[Instumental interlude]
It was easy then to know what was fair
When to keep and when to share.
How much to protect your heart
And how much to care.
But today there is no day or night
Today there is no dark or light.
Today there is no black or white,
Only shades of gray.
Only shades of gray.
So many extreme liberals have been saddled with more than their share of life's burdens. Physical problems, mental problems, emotional problems, lack of a loving family, lack of a father, abuse as children.
They grow up feeling angry, alienated, abnormal and left out. They latch onto some cult-like group that offers them a balm for their painful lives, and that's it. No bottom to how messed up they can get.
Of course, when they turn so hostile (murderous, sometimes) it makes it hard to really feel sorry for them.
Look at Rachel Maddow. Listen to Janice Ian's heartwrenching masterpiece At Seventeen. You can dismiss it as maudlin self-pity, but I can't really do so. There's something there. I can't do anything about it, but it's still there.
I sure wouldn’t argue that with you, the precedent has been set already.
The prosecutors and the journalists are going out of their way to not name the organization that paid for Rebecca to hide from law enforcement for 6 years...which is presumably the same organization that is paying to hide the two eco-terror masterminds to their 4 year arson spree.
